Position Description: Middle School Teacher
Reports to: Principal
Status: Exempt
POSITION OBJECTIVE
· Plan and deliver project-based learning that is sequenced and aligned to the Common Core Standards. The candidate should be familiar with and able to actively use a wide range of strategies including incorporating student choice and voice, integration through collaboration with the rest of the teaching team, and ability to teach and manage with a whole-child approach. Teacher should possess excitement and proven track record in a dynamic learning environment.
Responsibilities:
· Build quality relationships with students
· Establish a culture of high expectations, which includes standards mastery and high school/college preparation for students
· Encourage the exploration of learning opportunities and persevere with challenging tasks
· Engage and support students in learning by using a variety of instructional strategies and resources to respond to students’ diverse needs and by engaging students in problem solving and critical thinking skills, using culturally relevant examples
· Work towards developing and maintaining cultural competencies
· Instruct students in citizenship and character education
· Engage in planning and implementation processes to ensure a safe and nurturing learning environment for students
· Work closely with agency’s family support and youth development programs to ensure the needs of students are met
· Work with, and host, community partners to enhance classroom learning
· Develop a strong home-school relationship with the families to ensure effective communication to best meet the needs of students.
· Prepare progress and report cards and conduct parent-teacher conferences three times a year.
· Meet with families as needed and serve as a positive representative for Christopher House
· Communicate school-wide and agency-wide events to parents
· Work collaboratively with a teaching partner to meet the needs of all students in the classroom
· Make contributions to school culture outside of the classroom through leadership participation in field trips, special events and other school functions
· Work closely with special education, support staff and administration to provide necessary accommodations and modifications for students
· Act as an advocate for children and families to the agency, the community and the professional field
· Provide parents with resources that will enable them to act as advocates for their children and families
· Utilize data-driven assessment, including classroom assessment tools, student surveys, BAS, DESSA, PARCC and NWEA, to inform curriculum and instructional choices
· Participate in regular data and assessment review sessions to differentiate instruction and create more effective classroom learning
· Complete necessary assessments, reports and records in an accurate and timely manner
Qualifications:
· Strong alignment with Christopher House’s Values and Mission;
· Strong work ethic coupled with a proactive problem-solving approach;
· Three years teaching experience in an urban setting strongly preferred;
· Math or Science/STEAM teaching experience highly desired
Education:
· Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or similar degree required
· PEL license with Science or Math endorsement required
· Additional endorsements in ELA, ESL strongly preferred
