Departmental Objective
The University Police Department’s mission is to patrol the University properties helping to assure the safety and well being of students, faculty, staff and visitors to the campus by using the philosophy of community policing. The Department’s mission will be achieved through a proactive, community service approach to problem resolution and by offering crime prevention programs on safety, self-protection, substance abuse, sexual assault, and protection of personal belongings. This mission will be the charge of every employee of this department.
Purpose of the Position
To protect life and property of the University community and its visitors by providing law enforcement services, traffic and crowd control, and fire prevention and safety.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Related to Position
Required for Certified Officer:
- Ability to successfully complete associated field training within one year of employment
- Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to deal effectively with individuals and groups
- Ability to collect and assemble pertinent facts, to exercise tact, initiative, ingenuity, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling law enforcement matters
- Ability to write clear and concise reports
- Demonstrated computer experience
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work with a culturally diverse department and University community
- Ability to perform strenuous physical activities such as running, lifting, jumping, bicycling, and climbing Knowledge of and ability to apply state laws and University regulation, law enforcement techniques, procedures, operations and investigations, safety and security methods, crime prevention techniques and positive community relations

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required
Education Required for Certified and Non Certified Officers:
- High school diploma or equivalent education.
- Valid driver’s license.
Certified Officers
- Applicants must have current/active Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Basic Law Enforcement (BLE) certification, to include successful completion of DCJS-approved field training
Non Certified Officers:
- Ability to successfully complete basic law enforcement academy training and associated field training within one year of employment.
Additional Consideration(s)
Experience Preferred:
- Experience working at a university or college institution or municipal public safety agency in a public safety capacity.
Education Preferred:
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree or 60 credit hours towards a degree program.
Salary Information
Minimum Starting Salary of $53,230 for Non Certified Officers. Certified Officers will Commensurate with Education and Law Enforcement Experience.
