Job Description
Chronicle Heritage is seeking a Staff Architectural Historian who can assist in research and writing tasks on moderate to complex archival research, windshield and reconnaissance surveys, and can prepare built environment assessments and reports. The On-Call Staff Architectural Historian will lead reconnaissance to inventory-level surveys and assist with efforts to identify and document buildings, structures, objects, districts and historic landscapes. They may also assist with developing National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and local register significance evaluations and assessments of effect. The ideal candidate will have experience in a variety of areas including:
Schedule: Project dependent; periodic weekend work expected
Location: Utah, Texas, Wyoming, Oregon, New Mexico, Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Virginia.

- Leading small-scale historic properties surveys
- Photographing and documenting buildings
- Determinations of Eligibility
- NRHP Nominations
- Conducting archival research
- Assisting in writing historic contexts
- Understanding of relevant architectural styles
- Working in remote areas

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in history, architectural history, historic preservation, public history, heritage conservation, history, or a closely related field.
- Experience with the history, architecture, and infrastructure of the relevant regions
- Ability to conduct pedestrian surveys, including walking in rough terrain and challenging weather in various locations.
- Must demonstrate excellent attention to detail, a positive work ethic and attitude, reliability, and commitment to working both independently and in a team environment.
- A valid U.S. driver’s license is required at the time of employment.
- Master’s degree in architectural history, historic preservation, public history, heritage conservation, history, or a closely related field
- Meet or exceeds the SOI Standards for Architectural History
- 1 years of professional experience as an Architectural Historian
- Strong verbal and written communication, and time management skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Fluency in Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat
- Familiarity with ESRI Survey123 and iOS software
