Functions with demonstrated expertise in patient care for mental and behavioral health. The nurse provides direct clinical care and support within the behavioral health realm. As a recognized resource for consultation to the bedside staff, the nurse assists assessment, clinical management, communication, crisis prevention, regulatory readiness, and evidence-based care practice. Proactively supports efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promotes a safe environment.

Children's does not provide inpatient psychiatric treatment, but this Behavioral Assessment Team supports our patients, families and staff in the inpatient setting.

We have many pediatric patients who are receiving medical care primarily, while also presenting with co-occurring mental health needs that may require additional consideration and planning. Our Behavioral Health nurses respond to support requests, bringing their expertise so that we can be sure to provide the best and safest care for all of our patients and families.

  • Requires Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state of Wisconsin
  • Requires current CPR - BLS certification. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross. 
  • Requires at least an Associates degree in Nursing. Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
  • Requires at least 1 year of experience in nursing. Prefers at least 2 years of nursing experience.
  • Requires 1 year experience with patients having co-occurring behavioral health presentations, or in psychiatric or behavioral health

Experience working with diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds  

Experience in a pediatric medical setting is strongly preferred.

Experience working with children, adolescents, and families

Exhibits guiding behaviors that reflect Children’s values and support our mission and vision.

Understands the pediatric developmental stages and child/family responses to fear, illness, injury, and hospitalization.

Analytical skills are necessary to assess complex patient conditions effectively and to develop comprehensive plans of care.

Synthesizes multiple sources of information to assist in the resolution of human responses to complex problems.

Interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with interdisciplinary health team members and consumers. 

Ability to delegate patient care activities effectively to unlicensed staff as appropriate and where indicated.

The ability to represent the organization and serve consumers in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the organization and its services.

Mental and sensory abilities to read, process and interpret clinical data.

Flexible to ambiguity and unpredictability of patient presentations/needs.

Provides services in a setting where there is potential for exposure to blood and other high risk body fluids, chemotherapy agents, communicable disease and hazardous materials, chemicals, and waste.

Ongoing risk of vicarious trauma by providing services to a population that carriers a high burden of injury through experiencing adversity and violence.

May need to move from furniture to floor or engage in play-type activities with children in a variety of room types (exam, interviewing, therapy).

May need to verbally de-escalate upset children, adolescents, or adults.

May need to adapt approaches or communication styles to fit the needs of the patient population.

Flexible Schedule Options: This position could be either an FTE .9 NIGHT shift role. 3 - 12 hour shifts or based upon preference of selected candidate, a part-time FTE .6 (2 - 12 hour shifts), or possibly FTE .3 (1 - 12 hour shift). Schedule will be Nights: 7:00pm-7:30am. FTE of .5 and above are benefit eligible.
