Overview

The Cultural Resources Archeologist is responsible for oversight of the cultural resource programs for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. Under the direction of the Culture Resources Manager and general supervision of the Tribal Elders Council, the Cultural Resources Archeologist ensures the preservation and protection of culturally significant sites and the conservation and relocation of cultural findings. Works in conjunction with the Elders Council to develop and maintain government-to-government discussions and contract fulfillment at various job sites. 

Responsibilities

  • Represents the Elders Board during consultation with local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Works with Tribal Elders Council and the Cultural Director to determine when archaeological site visits are necessary and report findings.
  • Develops project site reports and maps.
  • Attends hearings, project meetings, training, and/or conferences with or on behalf of the Elders Council and Culture Department.
  • Attends bi-monthly Elders Board meetings and reports on strategic goals of the department in alignment with Elders Council vision.
  • Performs field surveys, inspections of archaeological sites and construction areas, resource stabilization, and surveillance of sensitive and threatened archaeological resources.
  • Coordinates archaeological surveys with key stakeholders.
  • Provides monitoring services when necessary.
  • Provides Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) direct oversight and support findings and reburials.
  • Works with Elders Council and Public Relations to establish strategies for media responses as related to Cultural Resources and findings.
  • Works with Elders Council and Legal department in establishing and maintain contacts with local officials.
  • Works alongside Project Managers and provides support as necessary.
  • Coordinates with Museum Collections/Archival Manager and/or Museum Director on cultural artifacts for inclusion in Museum’s collection, records, and database.
  • Develops and executes monitor training and on-site classes for new hires and current staff.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED certificate.
  • Bachelor’s Degree Anthropology, History Historic Preservation Archaeology, Museum Studies, or equivalent work experience.
  • Master’s Degree in Anthropology, History, Historic Preservation, Archaeology, Museum Studies is a plus.
  • Five years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Three years of experience working with Native American tribes.
  • Three years of experience working with culturally sensitive sites.
  • Extensive knowledge of NAGPRA law, policy, compliance, and enforcement.
  • Knowledge of Chumash history preferred.
  • Intermediate computer proficiency utilizing Microsoft applications, email, and internet.
  • Native American hiring preference applies.
