FUNCTION
The Assistant Track Superintendent directly supports the Track Superintendent by ensuring administrative and operating excellence of the department, turf/dirt surfaces, and relationships with company leadership, owners, trainers, and other stakeholders of Churchill Downs Racetrack (CDRT).
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Co-managing departmental operations as directed by the Track Superintendent.
- Planning, organizing, and supporting all aspects of track and turf maintenance.
- Operating and maintaining all equipment (tractors, loaders, graders, etc.) necessary to prepare both dirt and turf surfaces for racing and training.
- Proposing and implementing innovative methods and tactics designed to improve operations, minimize costs, and maximize use of materials and assets.
- Advising on the use of chemical/non-chemical applications needed to minimize turf threatening diseases.
- Determining priorities, projects, and tasks needed to ensure continuous care, maintenance, and operating excellence of racetrack surfaces.
- Conferring with the Track Superintendent to define and specify needs related to capital projects, budgets, and other priorities.
- Managing the implementation of capital projects designed to maintain the utilization, safety, and effectiveness of designated facilities.
- Documenting protocols utilized to manage, test, and ensure preventative and ongoing maintenance of all racing surfaces.
- Assisting in track accreditation processes designed to uphold standards and practices that support the comprehensive safety and integrity of horseracing.
- Assist with preparing and monitoring departmental budgets and expenditures.
- Procuring tools, equipment, supplies and essential items in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
- Ensuring that all racing surfaces are safe and fair for horse racing activities. This includes procuring proper materials for the track surface, properly applying those materials and properly watering, grading, and preparing all racing surfaces.
- Work with Director of Backside Maintenance on developing team members to build cross functional knowledge of operational processes, industry standards, emerging technologies, and strategies to ensure the leadership position of CDRT in the industry.
- Consulting with the Racing Secretary and other leadership as necessary to finalize decisions related track operations (race card, surface, etc.).
- Understanding and effectively articulating the company position on gaming, medication, testing, betting, and other issues as advised.
- Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Track Superintendent is responsible for co-managing all team members assigned to maintain dirt and turf racing surfaces.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree, University certification, or a minimum of 5-10 years of management experience and /or training. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be deemed acceptable.
Must be proficient on equipment including tractors, loaders and have experience grading a racetrack.
