Summary

The ISP Tech is an all-around high level, extensively experienced fiber network maintenance position, which specializes in testing, splicing, and trouble shooting on vast and diverse passive optical fiber networks from a maintenance and repair perspective. It also includes network build outs of fiber optic cable and fiber facility relocates and changes. Working in live fiber networks requires this position to be highly responsive and reactive. The position is for total network maintenance which demands activities in all types of environments. E.g. apartment complexes, attics, aerial fiber lines, direct buried fiber lines, vault work, drop work, etc.

Essential Functions:
  • Fusion splicing fiber optic strands and cables for network build, repair, and maintenance.
  • Connecting fiber optic jumpers and drops (AERIAL, BURIED AND PLENUM)
  • Extensive OTDR testing and characterization. For provisioning and troubleshooting.
  • Reading and implementing fiber network design prints to perform work in the field.
  • Running of temporary fiber drop in a manner that does not pose a safety hazard to the public
  • Splicing of fiber drop connectors
  • Installation of ONT and power supplies
  • Installations may require burying fiber drop
  • Verification of service
  • Taking DB loss readings at all splitter points and terminated ends
  • Opens trenches, backfills and compacts trenches using hand tools and power equipment.
  • Placing strand and fiber, or copper cable in aerial applications.
  • Pulls cable and wire through trenches and structural areas of buildings.
  • Removes and replaces sod on easements.
  • Prepping buried and aerial fiber optic enclosures for splicing and activation
  • Active service drops and cables by splicing with a fusion splicer
  • Excavating and exposing fiber optic lines with hand tools.
Skill Requirements:
  • Experience with fiber installations, fusion splicing, and live traffic identification
  • Experience with test sets such as Signal Strength Meter and OTDR
  • Experience with routers and home networking
  • Technical understanding of loss, attenuation, and tiling.
  • Working within attics and placing wiring between walls
  • Computer skills
  • Experience with network originating equipment
  • Knowledge of Passive Optical network (PON) design and implementation
  • Knowledge of OLTs and optical line Cards. Ability to communicate with Network operations centers
  • Experience building and accessing fiber optic splice enclosures of all makes and sizes
Job Requirements:
  • Valid state driver’s license and non-negligent driving record.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 100 lbs.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours with the understanding that workdays can be more than normal hours and some weekend and holiday work may be required.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug/alcohol screen.
  • Ability to visually perceive differences in wire and cable colors.
  • Ability to complete on-the-job and/or classroom training to remain competitive in the telecommunications field.
  • Ability to be “on call” and “on standby” in relation to the workload.
Physical Demands:
  • Work involves standing, talking, hearing, using hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reaching with hands and arms.
  • The employee is frequently required to walk (10%), sit (5%), climb (10%), balance (5%), stand (15%), stoop (5%), kneel (5%), drive (20%), reach (10%), and smell (5%).
  • Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment; and ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • The employee must frequently push, pull, lift (10%) and/or carry up to 100 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in inclement weather conditions.
  • The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
  • The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
