The Quality and EHS Manager will oversee all aspects of quality management, environmental compliance, health and safety standards, and laboratory operations within the talc and barite production facility. This role is critical in maintaining the facility's adherence to ISO 9000 standards, IDEM environmental regulations, MSHA safety protocols, and all internal and external quality and compliance requirements. The successful candidate will lead a team of two laboratory personnel, ensuring operational efficiency and a safe, compliant, and high-quality working environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Quality Management (ISO 9000 System):
- Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of the ISO 9000 Quality Management System (QMS) within the facility.
- Ensure that all processes and operations are aligned with ISO 9000 standards, conducting regular audits and assessments to identify areas for improvement.
- Develop, review, and revise standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure ongoing compliance with ISO 9000 and industry best practices.
- Monitor and report on quality metrics, ensuring consistent production of talc and barite that meet both internal and external quality requirements.
- Facilitate internal and external audits, coordinate corrective actions, and support any non-conformance investigations.
- Follow industry trends and standards
Environmental Compliance (IDEM):
- Manage compliance with IDEM (Indiana Department of Environmental Management) regulations, ensuring all environmental permits are up to date and adhered to.
- Oversee the environmental monitoring and reporting process, ensuring compliance with air, water, waste, and other environmental standards.
- Implement initiatives to reduce the facility’s environmental impact, driving sustainability and efficiency in production processes.
- Collaborate with regulatory bodies and industry groups to stay updated on changes to environmental laws and regulations, ensuring the facility remains compliant.
- Follow industry trends and standards
Health and Safety (MSHA Controlled Worksite):
- Ensure that the facility is compliant with all MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations and standards for safe operations.
- Develop and implement health and safety programs, ensuring ongoing training and compliance with MSHA safety requirements.
- Conduct regular safety audits, hazard analyses, and risk assessments for the facility, identifying and addressing potential hazards proactively.
- Oversee the coordination and management of emergency response plans, ensuring they are practiced and communicated to all staff regularly.
- Manage the training of personnel in safe work practices and ensure that MSHA certification requirements are met for all appropriate staff.
- Manage the SDS documentation, and assist customers that need support for our products in Health and Safety along with FDA approvals
- Follow industry trends and standards
Laboratory Management:
- Supervise and lead two laboratory personnel, ensuring the efficient operation of the laboratory and the timely delivery of accurate analytical results for production and quality control.
- Oversee laboratory testing processes related to talc and barite materials, ensuring that testing procedures are accurate, reliable, and in line with industry standards.
- Ensure proper calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the laboratory team.
- Provide technical guidance and support to laboratory personnel, including training and development opportunities.
- Oversee external testing of our products and maintain external relationships with labs.
Certification and Training:
- Maintain annual certification in Smoke School, as required, ensuring the facility’s compliance with relevant regulations.
- Pursue and maintain MSHA Trainer certification, providing training to the workforce on MSHA safety regulations and best practices.
- Develop and deliver safety and compliance training programs to all employees, ensuring that they are aware of and adhere to health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in a management role within an industrial setting (preferably in the mining, minerals processing, or similar field).
- Certifications:
- Annual Smoke School Certification.
- MSHA Certification (or the ability to become certified).
- ISO 9000 QMS or similar quality management training.
- Skills & Knowledge:
- Strong working knowledge of ISO 9000 Quality Management Systems and continuous improvement methodologies.
- In-depth understanding of environmental regulations, particularly IDEM and related compliance standards.
- Experience working in a regulated, MSHA-controlled environment with a strong commitment to health and safety practices.
- Proven leadership abilities, with experience in managing and developing small teams (laboratory personnel).
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and manage external relationships.
- Familiarity with laboratory operations, quality control processes, and analytical methods used in talc and barite production.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with talc and barite production or other mineral processing industries.
- Experience with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) compliance in a mining or manufacturing setting.
- Certification as an MSHA Trainer or related training qualifications.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in an industrial manufacturing environment, including exposure to dust, noise, and other environmental factors.
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to wear required safety gear (PPE), including respirators, hearing protection, and safety glasses, when necessary.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
