Position Summary
The Dog Care Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the Dog Care Lead Specialists are implementing progressive programming under the direction of the Dog Care Program Manager while fulfilling our commitment to lifesaving and public safety. Key functions of the Dog Care Coordinator include overseeing dog care, population management, and overseeing Dog Care Specialists through daily assignments and tasks.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Ensure Dog Care staff are maintaining high levels of cleaning, feeding and customer service
- Coordinate Dog Care staff’s daily assignments including morning cleaning and afternoon support and adoption assistance
- Assist with Dog Care scheduling
- Assist with dog movement through the shelter
- Help identify dogs who are struggling in the shelter environment and work with the Enrichment Coordinator to implement personalized enrichment plans
- Assist with the transport of dogs to rescue or medical appointments as needed
- Assist with cleaning, feeding and adoption meet and greets as needed
- Assist with the training of new Dog Care staff
- Follow and promote stringent safety protocols and guidelines
- Think outside the box and utilize the ideas of other shelter professionals when faced with a difficult animals
- Stay current on shelter best practice
- Must be able and willing to work with unpredictable, difficult, and sometimes dangerous animals
- Must take a collaborative approach and know when to ask for help
- Must approach each animal as an individual and set aside bias, conscious or unconscious
- Be present and timely for the duration of each work day
- Be empathetic and compassionate when interacting with the animals, staff and public
- Foster a work environment that motivates our team and inspires exceptional work
- Make a commitment to working cooperatively with volunteers and develop positive relationships
- Work collaboratively with shelter staff, including the Cat Care team, Adoption Counselors, the Medical Team, Behavior and Training and Foster and Volunteer Coordinators

- Adheres to all CAC safety policies and reports injuries to the Director within 24 hours of injury.

- Communicates regularly with the Director about departmental issues.
- Demonstrates flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload.
- Participates in meetings with other CAC personnel, including and shares ideas and suggestions designed to improve working conditions and the organization's ability to meet its lifesaving objectives.
- Can lift up to 50 lbs. long periods of standing, bending, and intermittent exposure to high noise levels.
- Recognizes the value volunteers bring to the organization. Encourages and develops volunteers to support the program's objectives.
- A willingness and enthusiasm for a continued state of learning regarding Animal Welfare.
Requirements:
- High School or equivalent. College Degree preferred.
- 2-3 years of experience in supervisory roles in any industry.
- Experience running successful playgroup programming
- Experience working or volunteering in an animal shelter or rescue organization for at least one year is preferred.
- Any combination of training and experience which demonstrates successful animal handling, sanitation or expertise and the knowledge and skills necessary for this position.
- Exceptional Customer Service ability
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and safe driving record acceptable to the CAC insurance carrier.
Working Conditions:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, controls, or tools listed above; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
- Exposure and handling unvetted animals and their waste is frequent.
