JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as a Resource- Demonstrate advanced competence in specimen collection and laboratory support services, knowledge, skills and behaviors. Fulfills lead role or subject matter expert within Department. Effectively communicate with team members and contribute to their growth by sharing knowledge, experience, and skills; stay abreast of changes in key systems; serve as an expert resource to the department, and/or hospital in specimen collection and laboratory problem resolutions.
Process Improvement I- Serve in a lead role for safety and quality improvement efforts within the Department. Participate in improving /assuring organizational and/or departmental performance/quality through recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data and/or providing input to department discussions. Anticipate and actively identify and recommend areas for process/system improvement. May work with appropriate personnel to implement agreed upon changes. May participate in the evaluation of improvement initiatives/activities.
Technical- Responsible for identifying and implementing process changes, drafting technical and procedural documents. Collection of samples for laboratory testing following approved laboratory procedures. Receive and accession specimens using LIS; ensuring proper patient identification, specimen integrity and timeliness. Performs EPIC registration as required. Performs defined supervised testing under an approved department program. Testing program must be supervised, CLIA compliant and must be approved the Laboratory Director. Competencies are required following CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines. Position is cross-trained to perform more than one function of laboratory support within the Department. Resolves test order related issues (test in question, sample in question) and manages add-on tests. Researches and resolves unusual/uncommon tests. Perform routine procedures within respective discipline, including the collection and analysis of data which will affect decisions regarding patient care. Accurately and completely documents activities in HIS or LIS as appropriate.
Customer Service - Patient/Provider- Act as a customer advocate and strive to better meet the needs of, and to support, patients and/or families. Utilize a customer focus to complete assignments and/or interact with customers in a courteous, attentive and conscientious manner. Respond quickly to parent requests and concerns. Provide appropriate education/information to patients and/or families. Acts as a resource to external customers to the lab, primarily nursing unit staff and ordering physicians and their offices and/or staff. Responds to questions regarding specimen collection and handling, laboratory intake processes and test results. Provides advanced troubleshooting and problem resolution for all laboratory customers.
Department Support- Produces work that is accurate, neat, complete and timely. Identifies technical and specimen related problems or discrepancies. Demonstrates knowledge of laboratory information systems. Ability to retrieve result, locate, specimen requirements, fax results, troubleshoot a specimen test issue. Performs registrations, scanning, and assists send-outs in monitoring pending logs. Perform routine operational functions such as supply inventory. Monitors transfer lists from outpatient laboratories to assure specimen receipt. Demonstrates flexibility within the department. Assists supervisor in scheduling staff assignments. Serves as a Preceptor for training and onboarding new staff.
To provide laboratory support services, including; customer service, specimen collection and point-of-care testing services and processing of laboratory samples for the Clinical Laboratory department of a Medical Center dedicated to the care of infants, children and adolescents.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Tech II
High school diploma or equivalent
2 years of experience in a related job discipline
Preferred: Associate's degree in science or 2 years in healthcare
Tech III
High school diploma or equivalent
3 years of experience in a related job discipline
Preferred: Associate's degree in science or 2 years in healthcare
