Position Summary and Purpose: Improve the condition of material surfaces which can include removing slag, breaking corners, dressing edges, cleaning with blasts of abrasives, and spraying material with a prime coat of paint. Also assist workers engaged in operating powered lifting equipment.Duties and Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL:
- Receive work assignment, secure drawings and determine work as needed; place plates, weldments and parts on floor, in work area or shot blast car with aid of overhead crane
- Knock off slag with air chisel or hammer and chisel, clean all holes, break required edges, rough grind exterior edges following contour of plate using portable power grinder, dress required edges
- May move work items with aid of material handling equipment such as hand truck or electric walkie. Assist workers engaged in operating power cranes used to lift and move non-palletized materials such as castings, weldment and steel plate
- Burr small parts as required using portable disc grinder and/or belt grinder
- Load shot blast car, manually or with crane. May on occasion hand shot blast items utilizing portable blasting equipment while wearing protective clothing.
- Prime paint surfaces after grinding or shot blast operation with brush, roller, spray equipment or other painting apparatus
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area and perform all assignments in a safe manner and in accordance with established quality procedures
Education and Experience:
REQUIRED:
- High School diploma or certificate of equivalency
Valued But Not Required:
- 1 year prior warehouse or manufacturing experience
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Characteristics, etc.
REQUIRED:
- Attention to detail with ability to multitask
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings
- Understanding of basic math concepts
- Ability to use power hand tools

- PC skills and general computer knowledge
- Prior exposure to metal fabricating industry
Tools, Technology and Equipment Used: Variety of portable power grinders, steel shot blast machine, belt grinder, spray booth, overhead cranes, chains, slings and other hoisting equipment, hand tools, measuring and marking tools
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. This position is active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, reaching with hands and arms and climbing ladders daily. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and to climb or balance.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud at times.
The employee must regularly lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
