Responsibilities:
Role Expectations and Competencies
As an Asphalt Roller Operator you may perform any combination of tasks to assist on a wide variety of construction sites. This position performs a wide variety of duties and tasks that often require them to assist other.

- Assist in the preparation of sites, unloading, loading, and moving construction materials, and clearing debris and hazards
- Perform pre work equipment inspection, and submit proper inspection report per company policies.
- Prepare equipment as needed for daily activities. Top off fluids, grease, fill water tanks, etc.
- Stage equipment on site in preparation of work commencing.
- With Foreman direction operate either breakdown or finish roller.
- Monitors rolling temperature and works within temperature best suited for material being laid.
- Determine rolling drum mode.
- Have a thorough understanding of material thickness, type of material being laid, and material temperature for determining rolling range.
- Make frequency and amplitude adjustments depending on mix design, material thickness, temperature zone, and density.
- Optimize water systems controls to avoid material pickup and eliminate excessive water usage.
- Establish rolling pattern and determine paving width, roller drum width, drum overlap, and paver speed.
- Works with density technician to make sure density requirements are being achieved.
- Communicate with paving crew on any flaws in material or finished mat.
- Understand proper techniques for rolling transverse joints.
- Recognize flow lines and inverts.
- Try to minimize roller marks.
- Works with paving crew with hand rolling, plate compactor work, manholes and catch basins.
- Help trim edge lines and pickup excess asphalt material.
- Upon completion of day, cleanup all tools, aid in the cleanup of equipment, and cleanup site.
- Direct traffic near construction sites when necessary to ensure the safety of workers and the public, including set up and maintenance of cones, barricades and safety fencing
- Strong commitment to attendance and punctuality a must.
Qualifications And Requirements
- Experience in asphalt and roller operations or a related field 3-5 years’ experience
- OSHA 10 certification preferred but not required
- Ability and willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to walk, stand, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, sit, climb, work in challenging environments and on uneven surfaces, and perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials (up to 50 pounds).
- Ability to remain alert and see, hear, and respond to team members and the surrounding environment in highly safety sensitive working conditions and near large heavy civil equipment and/or live traffic.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Excellent teamwork, communication skills and ability to follow instructions.
- Reliable transportation.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to pass Company pre-employment drug screen

- Ability to work nights, weekends, and travel out of town as needed.
