Position Summary:

As a Substation General Foreman you will manage and supervise multiple crews simultaneously in all aspects of planning , lay-out, installation, testing, repair, or maintenance of high voltage substation wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, motors, forms, rebar, embeds and anchor bolts, equipment and control systems in generating stations, substations, and in-service relays in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards. Plan and coordinate the efforts of the foremen and crew members under his/her supervision and motivate them to accomplish the work safely, correctly, and efficiently.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Be able to perform all the principal duties and accountabilities of craft workers under his/her supervision.
  • Lead and support all safety related processes and programs as requested. Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries.
  • Be proficient in scheduling, material control, unit man-hour performance, estimating fundamentals, and job cost management in the Field Process Management System (FPMS).
  • Be able to create and execute a 4-week schedule and monitor the foreman’s one-week schedule.
  • Monitor/plan crew goals and proactively make changes necessary to keep crews on track with goals.
  • Review and approve crew's timecards for correct hours and phase coding.
  • Participate in incident investigations and report accidents and act to prevent future occurrences to project management and site safety. Assist in leading the investigation process as needed and review accidents and the causes with employees.
  • Lead, complete, and sign off on daily pre-job safety planning in the appropriate format.
  • Understand, support, implement, and follow lockout/tag-out procedures.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills. Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
  • Listen to other employees and supervisor's suggestions, complaints, problems, safety concerns and recommendations, evaluate each and then devise and implement a plan of action based on that evaluation. Consult with supervisor and if needed HR on any issues.
  • Coordinate and communicate work with other crafts and co-workers on the job. As requested by project supervision manage other crafts when needed.
  • Assure Foreman are providing on-the-job training to craft workers, and that they perform task planning to safely and efficiently carry out all aspects of that work assigned.
  • Train/teach safety practices, policies and procedures related to an employee's assigned tasks and ensure that foremen do the same.
  • Plan and communicate with supervisor to ensure that an adequate supply of tools, materials and equipment is available.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the project plans, specifications, and schedule as they relate to that portion of the work assigned; review with foremen at start of and throughout the task.
  • Monitor productivity rates and review with foremen. Prepare daily reports completely and accurately.
  • Assure employees produce quality work, meeting the requirements of plans, specifications and industry standards. Ensure all Quality Control forms are available and being completed in a timely manner. Review, approve and submit to supervisor.
  • Read and understand plans and specifications, including P&ID, orthographic, and isometric drawings. Visualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Assure crews plan, lay-out, diagram, install and/or repair all substation wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment in accordance with those plans and specifications.
  • Inspect subordinate's work for compliance with the contract plans, specifications, and industry standards. Ensure that correct construction procedures are followed during installation. Point out deficiencies, explain them, and take corrective action needed.
  • Observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
  • Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost saving measures that arise or that may be encountered. Take corrective actions as needed.
  • Ensure that construction equipment is correctly operated, maintained, in good working order, and Daily Equipment Inspections are completed for equipment being utilized.
  • Perform all other job-related duties as requested by supervisor.
Requirements:
  • Must have working experience as a Substation Foreman and Substation Journeyman or equivalent combination of education and experience in an industrial construction setting.
  • Must set standards of excellence in leadership, safety, quality, and productivity for the members of his/her crew.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Strong working knowledge of the project specifications and high voltage electrical and civil industry standards, including knowledge of -
  • Electrical substation components
  • Auto-level and transit for accurate lay-out and verification of finished grades
  • Fabrication and erection of forms with thorough knowledge of steel framed forms (i.e. Symons); fabrication and placement of rebar including proper tying techniques; and placing
  • Finishing and sealing concrete
  • The construction, testing, maintenance, and repair of substations.

It is preferred that you have one or more of the following certifications:

  • NCCER Electrician
  • NCCER Carpenter
  • NCCER Concrete Finisher
  • NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations
  • NCCER Rigging

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials, tools, and equipment (up to 50 pounds or more).
  • Must be able to traverse irregular and steep terrain.
  • Endurance to perform physical tasks throughout the workday, including bending, stooping, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
  • Agility and flexibility to navigate construction sites and access work areas, including climbing ladders and scaffolding.
  • Must be able to position one-self to work in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, and tunnels.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective gear most of the day.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Must have manual dexterity, a good sense of balance, and excellent hand-eye coordination.
