JOB TITLE :             CUSTODIAL WORKER II DIVISON :                ADMISSIONS SECURITY AND CONTROL LOCATION :            JUVENILE TEMPORARY DETENTION CENTER                                  11OO S HAMILTON                                  CHICAGO, ILLINOIS  60612 UNION :                    UNION-TEAMSTERS 700 GRADE :                   X10 SALARY :                 $51,616 Company Overview The Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center (JTDC) provides safe and temporary housing for youth ages 10 – 18 with pending legal action in the Cook County Courts. The JTDC is dedicated to providing its youth with leadership, structured care, and supervision through a balanced approach of creative programming and services that teach responsibility, accountability, and sensitivity. Each member of the JTDC staff is actively encouraged and supported in pursuit of creative participation, personal well-being, and professional development.   As the largest juvenile detention center in the nation, the facility contains five major departments and various offices consisting of 600 employees who serve an average daily population of 280 residents. The Custodial Worker II is responsible for the general custodial, building, and grounds maintenance for the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center (JTDC) facility. Typical Duties Collects garbage and disposes into compactor or open container on the dock as warranted multiple times daily. Breaks down cardboard boxes and places materials into special containers for cardboard recycling program. Utilizes automated chemical dispensing units to fill bottles with chemicals for distribution to residential units. Ensures custodial cart and custodial supply closets are properly stocked and cleaned daily. Cleans all areas in the facility according to approved Environmental Services Plan and Schedule. Assists with pickup and delivery of laundry to residential units as needed. Safely operates various electrically powered machines and related custodial equipment. Reports all unusual incidents, equipment repair or facility repairs needed to immediate supervisor. Safely uses various cleaning compounds, solvents and supplies to sanitize and disinfect facility daily. Assists in the loading and unloading of trucks carrying supplies and office furniture; moves furniture to designated areas in the facility. Prepares seating, platforms, and equipment for various gatherings, conferences, and meetings in the facility. Maintains exterior building presence by sweeping. Upkeeps the physical plant. Follows inventory tracking procedures. Follows JTDC policy and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. 3 years previous experience in a custodial capacity and knowledge of cleaning methods; institutional, correctional, or governmental experience strongly preferred. United States citizenship. 21 years of age at the time of application submission. Ability to : lift, push, pull, and otherwise move objects weighing up to 50 pounds; stand and / or walk for long periods of time; and exercise safety and care in cleaning to avoid injuries or breakage. Ability to work with cleaning compounds, solvents, and chemicals. Ability to effectively understand, communicate, and follow instructions in English (verbally and written). Demonstrates basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred. Bilingual communication skills preferred. Physical Requirements [ This job requires the ability to perform the essential functions contained in this description.  These include, but are not limited to, the following requirements.] Ability to move and lift furniture, equipment, refuse, laundry and containers weighing up to 50 lbs. Ability to exercise safety and care in the provision of custodial and laundry services. Ability to operate power-driven cleaning machines. Knowledge of cleaning chemical s and compounds. Extensive reaching, bending, lifting and moving of heavy objects or materials; climbing. Extended periods of walking throughout the facility. Extended periods of standing. Ability to effectively communicate (hear and respond) 10 codes through the intercom / radio transmission monitoring system. Must be able to work overtime based on departmental needs. Working Conditions Interaction with the public, employees and residents. Exposure to resident behavior problems that may include physical acting out and require safe physical management skills. Exposure to various chemicals and cleaning solvents. Exposure to facility physical deficiencies and pests. Exposure to various electrically powered driven machines and hand-held tools. Exposure to youth with various states of cleanliness and hygiene. Exposure to various health related conditions or residents of a communicable nature which requires precaution and adhering to medical instruction. Exposure to communicable diseases of youth. Hiring Requirements Illinois residency obtained within 90 days of date of hire. Pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check including but not limited to LEADS, CANTS, and professional references. A result of negative from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Child Abuse Registry. Must pass Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) screening requirements. Open daily availability for days, evenings, weekends, and holidays (shifts subject to change).
