Summary Description of Classification:

The Behavior Specialist will be responsible for assessing, implementing, and monitoring behavior intervention plans to promote the development of positive behaviors in individuals, particularly those with developmental disabilities, behavioral challenges, or other special needs. This position involves working with individuals of all ages and backgrounds, using evidence-based practices to improve behavioral outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Behavior Assessment:

  • Conduct thorough assessments of clients' behavioral challenges, including observation, interviews, and standardized assessments.
  • Identify triggers and patterns related to the challenging behaviors.
  • Collaborate with families, teachers, caregivers, and other professionals to gather comprehensive information on the individual’s history and current behavioral needs.

2. Develop and Implement Behavior Plans:

  • Design individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) tailored to the client’s specific needs.
  • Develop strategies that focus on preventing negative behaviors and reinforcing positive behaviors.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), or other appropriate frameworks.
  • Train families, caregivers, and staff on the implementation of behavior plans.

3. Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Regularly monitor the progress of clients and make necessary adjustments to behavior intervention plans.
  • Maintain accurate records of behavioral progress and setbacks and generate reports for supervisors and clients.
  • Provide regular feedback to families, caregivers, and team members on client progress.

4. Collaboration and Support:

  • Work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including psychologists, teachers, social workers, and other specialists.
  • Attend meetings with parents, school staff, or other service providers to ensure consistency in behavior interventions.
  • Offer guidance and training for parents and staff to support the generalization of behavior strategies in different settings.

5. Crisis Management:

  • Provide crisis intervention when necessary, ensuring the safety of the individual and others.
  • Develop strategies for managing high-risk behaviors that may pose safety concerns.

6.Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Education, or a related field (specific requirements may vary by employer).
  • Certification in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or related certifications (e.g., BCBA) is preferred.
  • Proven experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, autism, or behavioral challenges.
  • Strong understanding of behavioral principles, assessment techniques, and intervention strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping individuals improve their lives.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of other therapeutic approaches (e.g., Positive Behavior Support, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).
  • Experience working in a school or clinical setting.
  • Experience with data collection and analysis.

Certificate and License Requirements:

Must be eligible for a Clearance Certificate issued through the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
