JOB SUMMARY
A Phlebotomist is responsible for specimen collections in outpatient and inpatient locations. The Phlebotomist is expected to manage a high volume of collection requests for routine, timed and emergent needs. Specimen collections will span all ages and competency in age-specific requirements is expected. May be assigned duties including specimen processing, specimen registration and test ordering, inventory stocking, and pathology support.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Job Specific:
- Demonstrates successful phlebotomy or clerical responsibilities (EF).
- Effectively prioritizes specimen collection test priorities (STAT, Timed, Urgent, Routine) (EF).
- Responds to appropriate patient care alerts (Code Blue, Code Fast, Rapid Response, ER Alerts) in a timely manner (EF).
- Adheres to infection control standards by consistently using personal protective equipment (PPE) and follows patient isolation PPE requirements (EF).
- Meets expected turnaround times for specimen collection and transport to the lab (EF).
- Communicates effectively with other lab personnel to ensure collection demands are met (EF).
- Routes telephone calls and question to appropriate section (EF).
- Monitors the tube system in a timely manner (EF).
- Assists with clerical needs of the Laboratory (EF).
- Assists with supply orders and stocks inventory (EF).
- Accepts special assignments and tasks as guided by Laboratory leadership.
Hospital:
- Adheres to organization-wide and other applicable policies and procedures.
- Day-to-day performance complies with the hospital’s service excellence behavioral expectations and iCARE values.
- Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s Ethics, Compliance and Confidentiality Program guidelines.
- Performs within professional Scope of Practice at all times

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Required: High School diploma or equivalent education.
Preferred: Some college or continuing education hours.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Phlebotomist I - 6 months to one (1) year experience in phlebotomy.
Preferred: Experience with hospital inpatient collections, outpatient collections & services, testing ordering in computer systems, Chain-of-custody drug screen collections.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Required: Effective communication; customer service skills; Must be able to adapt to a flexible work schedule with frequent interruptions in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred: Effective clerical skills
