Casual Labor Camp Site Supervisor

This is a temporary employment opportunity not to exceed six (6) consecutive calendar months.


Oversees the direct supervision of camp counselors and campers.  The Site Supervisor plans, leads, and implements camp programs to campers. Provides high-quality educational and recreational opportunities and enjoyable experiences for camp participants. Supervises campers and ensures their safety, development, growth, skill achievement, and general well-being.


The schedule for this casual labor position varies and is less than 30 hours per week.
  • Maintains safety and well-being of counselors and camp participants by complying with all policies and procedures set forth by the Division of Parks and Recreation to ensure a consistent, high-quality experience.
  • Supervises, coaches/mentors camp counselors and serves as a positive role model and leader while maintaining daily a safe and wholesome environment.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by following assigned budgetary guidelines.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff, both, on-site at the Recreation Center, during transportation to and from field trip locations and during off-site field trip activities.
  • Provides open and clear communication to campers, parents, and other staff. 
  • Identifies behavioral problems and provides positive intervention with discipline related issues that is age appropriate and maintains respect of the campers.
  • Assists with implementation of summer camp curriculum.  
  • Guides and directs campers in a variety of camp games and activities.
  • Assists with the set-up, tear down, and clean-up of program activities.
  • Makes recommendations and suggestions to the supervisor.
  • Ensures the safety and security of facility and participants by conducting daily walk through of the facility and grounds.
  • Administers first-aid for accidents or injuries, reports to supervisor and timely documents all accidents and injuries.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education, Training, and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.   
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Elementary or Early Childhood education, preferred.
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Two (2) years’ experience working with school-aged children.
  • Prior experience in supervision of others.


Certificates, Licenses, Registration, Skills

  • Valid Florida Driver License (or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida), or valid Florida Identification Card is acceptable only for positions not required to drive a county vehicle.
  • Current certification in First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), or Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups, campers, parents, and the public.
  • Successful completion of Level II Background screening is required.
  • Must have strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of a variety of recreation activities suitable for children and youth.  Must have creative and artistic teaching abilities.
  • Ability to demonstrate outstanding communication, interpersonal and leadership skills with youth, staff, and parents in a positive and responsive manner.
  • Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule, effectively follow written and oral instructions, and have patience working with children and youth.
  • Must have working knowledge of computers.


Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Requires standing and walking most of the workday.
  • The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • The job requires frequent bending, squatting, balancing, throwing, twisting, and reaching above shoulders, and occasional kneeling and jumping.
  • The job requires the completion of tasks that involve simple grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manual manipulation.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.
  • The job may risk exposure to extreme noise.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities
  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens. Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.

Basis of Rating: Some positions may require a written and/or skills test. Applications will be carefully reviewed to assess each individuals’ qualifications. Selected persons will be interviewed to determine who will be hired for the job.  The kind and length of related work experience, training and education shown on the application will be an important consideration in the screening process.

Must successfully pass an employment reference check, LEVEL II background check, physical examination, and drug screen. Drug screens will be in accordance with the Drug Free Workplace Act and/or the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.
