Water Safety Instructor - Casual Labor

This is a CASUAL LABOR position and duration is no longer than 6 months.**
 
Adheres to pool policy and procedures for teaching swim instruction at the fundamental levels to youth and adults. Completes and records timely all required documentation.  Provides effective feedback to students and guardians. This position may require irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Location: Bicentennial Park Pool. 
 
The schedule for this casual labor position varies throughout the week and the position is located at the Bicentennial Pool, Crystal River, Florida.
  • Plans and teaches swimming lessons according to American Red Cross program guidelines.
  • Adapts teaching approaches to the ages, experiences, and abilities of participants so they can meet course objectives.
  • Enforces rules governing the conduct of persons at the swimming pool and assists to maintain the facility in an orderly condition.
  • Remain watchful and alert to prevent accidents in and out of the water, timely reports and documents all accidents and injuries with supervisor.
  • Communicates regularly with participants and guardians, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of progress.
  • Assists with the set-up, tear down, and clean-up of program activities.
  • Keeps accurate class and student records of all lessons.  Completes various paperwork for each class and submits them in a timely manner.
  • Assists with registration process for swim lessons.
  • Reports registration problems, inappropriate level assignment of students, guardian’s complaints and other related matters to Aquatics Supervisor or Head Lifeguard.
  • Starts and finishes class on time to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Follows instruction given from Head Lifeguard, Aquatics Supervisor, and Parks and Recreation Director.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Must be currently enrolled in High School, High School Diploma or GED equivalent. 
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to pass the following tests:
Swim the following strokes consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4
    • Front Crawl – 25 yards
    • Back Crawl – 25 yards
    • Breaststroke - 25 yards
    • Elementary backstroke – 25 yards
    • Sidestroke – 25 yards
    • Butterfly – 15 yards
    • Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
    • Tread water for 1 minute.
 
Certificates, Licenses, Registration, Skills
  • Valid Florida Driver License (or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida), or valid Florida Identification Card is acceptable only for positions not required to drive a county vehicle.
  • Successful completion of Level II Background screening is required.
  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.
  • Ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups, patrons, guardians, and the public.
  • Ability to demonstrate outstanding communication, interpersonal and leadership skills with youth, staff, and guardians in a positive and responsive manner.
  • Ability to listen and ascertain the needs of the student(s) and respond to students tactfully and courteously.
  • Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule, effectively follow written and oral instructions, and have patience working with children and youth.
  • Must have working knowledge of computers.
 
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Requires standing and walking most of the time.
  • The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • The job requires frequent bending, balancing, twisting, and reaching above shoulders, and on occasion squatting, kneeling, and throwing.
  • The job requires the completion of tasks that involve simple grasping, pushing, pulling, and typing.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities
  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.  Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.

Basis of Rating: Some positions may require a written and/or skills test. Applications will be carefully reviewed to assess each individuals’ qualifications. Selected persons will be interviewed to determine who will be hired for the job.  The kind and length of related work experience, training and education shown on the application will be an important consideration in the screening process.

Must successfully pass an employment reference check, level II background check, physical examination, and drug screen. Drug screens will be in accordance with the Drug Free Workplace Act and/or the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.
