Job description
We are currently looking for an EMS Dispatcher position based out of our communications center at our headquarters in Des Moines, IA.
The EMS Dispatcher position is a skilled service work that heavily revolves around customer service. It requires a considerable degree of initiative and independent judgment within procedural boundaries in responding to a variety of medical situations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receive & process emergency as well as non-emergency requests for ambulance transportation from hospitals, care providers, nursing facilities, etc. in an efficient manner to attain an appropriate and timely response.
- Determine the nature/urgency of calls & initiate appropriate personnel response or other emergency personnel action.
- Maintain close contact with field personnel to monitor response and ensure needed support requirements are met.
- Schedule ambulance transports using a computer aided dispatch system.
- Prioritize calls according to urgency and importance.
- Monitor radio communications for updates to vehicle status and use proper radio etiquette.
- Utilization of dispatch software, maps and tracking systems to dispatch appropriate vehicles and provide directions.
- Independently initiate action consistent with existing policies and procedures, based upon observed situations, and utilizing sound judgment.
- Analyze and interpret difficult and complex patient care and personnel situations.
- Anticipate and identify problems and take initiative to prevent or correct them.
- Create and maintain a positive and cooperative working environment in stressful situations.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel within the company, medical community, outside agencies & patients.
- Handle a significant number of stressful situations and be able to function calmly, coolly and collectedly under all types of stressful situations.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED from a U.S. accredited school
- Customer Service experience
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information in a discreet manner
- Proficiency with computer and related software, i.e. Word and Excel
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a MUST (correspondence, reports and assist in the processing of documents as required)
- Ability to answer telephone calls, resolve issues, provide information, and multitask
- Critical thinking skills and decisive judgement within a group setting are imperative
- Ability to sit for long periods of time.
- Proficient in all forms of the English language
- Be a U.S. Citizen or eligible to work and reside in the U.S.
Preferences:
- Medical knowledge/experience
- Experience in an ambulance/dispatching call center
- Minimum typing speed 40 wpm
- Live within a reasonable commute (30 minute average) from 50314.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 60 per week
