General Description of Work:
The Civilian Traffic Investigator performs non-commissioned intermediate-level work in the field of traffic accident investigation, traffic accident prevention, and criminal and incident report writing. Patrols assigned areas of the City to enforce laws and ordinances related to parking of motor vehicles. Work includes investigating traffic accidents and parking complaints, testifying in court, demonstrating working knowledge of state law, municipal ordinances, codes, and legal procedures relating to the operation of vehicles. This position performs criminal reporting procedures, evaluating information, collecting logs, and maintaining a chain of custody for evidence. Work involves using appropriate oral and written communication to prepare reports, interact with City staff and the public, and respond to calls for service, maintain equipment, and inspect accident investigation vehicles.
Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties:
Investigates traffic crashes and documents detailed accident reports.
Issues citations for violations of traffic laws and parking ordinances.
Takes police reports in person and on the phone.
Identifies potential items of evidentiary value and logs them appropriately, maintaining chain of custody.
Effectively uses legal and department knowledge to decipher laws, codes, and legal procedures
Testify in civil and criminal court, serve summonses, subpoenas, and notices.
Participate in community programs such as National Night Out, and Broomfield Days.
Demonstrate sound judgment, problem solving techniques, observation skills and ability to mediate disputes.
Safely and proficiently uses required vehicles and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
Graduation from high school or GED.
Successful completion of Accident/Reconstruction Certification following hire.
Experience
2 years of experience in public sector, investigative, law enforcement or related field - required.
Years of related experience may be substituted for required education, however education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience.
Necessary Applicant Traits:

Necessary Special Requirements:
New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: oral board, reference checks, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry, drug screen, CVSA/polygraph, medical/vision examination, psychological examination, and fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI. This position is required to drive a CCOB vehicle and a DMV check will be required.
Successful completion of Accident/Reconstruction Certifications within 2 years of hire.
Successful completion of First Aid/CPR training within 6 months of hire.
Cannot have been convicted of a felony or a disqualifying misdemeanor involving moral turpitude.
Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license and safe driving record for continued employment.
