The Park Services Division is a branch of the Parks, Recreation and Senior Services Department where employees are proactive, self driven and ambassadors to the community. Salary Range: $26.21 - $32.03/hour
Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties
- Performs maintenance on flower beds, shrub beds and turf areas including diagnosing and treating disease and pests.
- Assists Irrigation staff in determining proper water needs and scheduling.
- Assists Forestry staff in pruning of small caliper trees in the Urban Forest.
- Tracks and records all chemical use in Pesticide Log book.
- Maintains small tools and equipment that pertain to the position.
- Prepares and plants annual and perennial flower beds. Organizes, prioritizes daily task for self and seasonal employees.
- Trains seasonal employees in proper maintenance practice of all types of plant material and proper pesticide application methods.
- Prepares, develops, and maintains park areas which may include grass and weed mowing and trimming; tree and flower bed planting, watering, and maintenance; aeration; weed eradication; sprinkler irrigation; picking up trash; and snow removal.
- Assists in set-up for special events.
- Assists in the operation of snow equipment during inclement weather, and is available for snow control duties after hours and on weekends.
- Required to work special events on holidays, weekends, and outside normally scheduled working hours.
- Assists in inspections of contractor work, trash removal, painting, and equipment maintenance and operation.
- Supervises seasonal maintenance crew and assists supervisor in preparation of performance appraisals; may recommend appropriate disciplinary action.
- Assists supervisor in training of seasonal maintenance crew.
- May act as a troubleshooter to resolve problems within a particular area of assignment.
- Maintains a variety of records relating to maintenance, construction, and inspection of parks and facilities. Prepares requests for new equipment, materials, and supplies. Responds to complaints from the public regarding parks and facility conditions. Ensure that problems are corrected in a timely and effective manner. Completes reports and inventory as required.
- Operates construction and maintenance equipment such as pick-up trucks, dump trucks, tractors, water trailers, riding mowers, hand mowers, front-loaders, backhoes, box scrapers, tillers, aerators, snow blowers, sprayers, spreaders, weed trimmers, pruning tools, trenchers, grinders, and hand tools.
- Provides back-up coverage in the operation of snowplows during inclement weather. Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to appropriate division.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High school graduation or GED equivalent.
Currently holds, or can obtain a license in pesticide application from the department of Agriculture.
Experience:
- 1 year experience required in parks maintenance
- 1 year experience preferred in supervision of seasonal labor, volunteers, or part time position
Years of related experience may be substituted for required education, however education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: -
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record for continued employment.
Working Conditions

Physical demands are described as medium (exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects).- Duties require a full range of physical motion and activities including manual Labor.
- Work is generally scheduled Monday through Friday with some weekend and holiday work required
- Required On-Call responsibilities.
- Assists in the operation of snow equipment during inclement weather, and is available for snow control duties after hours and on weekends.
- Required to work special events on holidays, weekends, and outside normally scheduled working hours
- Regular contact is made with employees in other departments and the public.
