This class consists of semi-skilled work in the reading of water meters in the City and County's utility system. Provide holistic services to the public by seeking ways to integrate programs or services provided by other departments, divisions and agencies. The incumbent works in partnership with other employees, departments/divisions, agencies and the public in delivering effective and innovative services.
Position is approximately 20 hrs/week.

Read water meters at residential, commercial, and industrial sites using mobile collection units mounted in vehicles.
Record the meter read on some accounts by using hand-held meter reading units.
Uncover meter pits from under landscaping.
Traverse assigned routes and take readings of meter dials; record reading by inputting data into hand-held devices to provide needed information for utility billing.
Note any unusual changes in consumption, location or malfunctions such as leaks or damaged meters.
Duties require a full range of physical motion and activities including manual digging, pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting and turning the upper body, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing in and out of meter pits, balancing, crawling, reaching for objects, walking and standing.
Recheck readings as needed to determine abnormal consumption patterns and analyze possible causes for fluctuation or consumption.
Troubleshoot possible meter and/or electronic problems.
Maintain assigned tools, equipment and vehicles.
Education
High School Diploma/GED - required
Experience
Experience in reading meter dials preferred.
Some experience with computer keyboard and operation and experience using Windows.
OR
Years of related experience may be substituted for required education, however education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience
NECESSARY APPLICANT TRAITS AND SKILLS:
Skill in performing basic mathematical computations.
Skill in the operation of motor vehicles and hand tools.
Perform manual labor including considerable walking, stooping, bending, and occasional heavy lifting for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
Work from a broad direction with limited supervision.
Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment.
Necessary Special Requirements - Must be at least 18 years of age and must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment. Work involves working outdoors in all weather conditions. The worker may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and may be exposed to risk of electrical shock. Worker will be involved in climbing in and out of meter pits and operating hand tools and meter reading devices, all of which present certain safety hazards. Travel by motor vehicle is required to reach work sites. The noise level in the environment is moderate. Work is generally scheduled Monday through Friday. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, talk or hear, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell.
