The Adult Collection Specialist Librarianparticipates in building relevant, high interest, adult physical collections and other collection areas as determined by the needs of the department. Your primary location will be the Central Branch, however, DPL reserves the right to reassign locations based upon operational and / or staffing needs at any given time.
About Our Department
This position is part of the Collection Development Office, a small collaborative and supportive team that centers diversity and intellectual freedom in their work. Collection Development is based out of the Central Library and the positions in the department are currently hybrid, a mixture of in-person and remote work. Some on-site work at Central and in-person meetings at Central and various locations in the city will be required.
There is no free parking available at the Central Library, but there is paid parking available nearby. We do offer a reduced cost RTD Ecopass (currently free through the City) with convenient access to public transportation and indoor, secure bicycle parking.
About You
The ideal candidate for this role will be committed to their professional growth and the development of the library's collections by understanding trends, analyzing data, identifying diverse titles, and championing intellectual freedom.
Exercise professional judgment and expertise in the selection of appropriate materials, utilizing an equity, diversity, and inclusion framework for decision making.
Be accountable for good stewardship in spending collection budget line items and must spend tax dollars responsibly in alignment with , and within the parameters of a floating physical collection.
Track assigned budgets, analyze usage reports and make necessary adjustments, and participate in determining equitable annual budget allocations for library materials.
Strongly uphold the concept of Intellectual Freedom which affords all library users the right to seek and receive information on the subject of one’s interest without examination or scrutiny by others.
Foster close ties with Advisory Services and branch staff, and use library data to promote collections and improve collection performance.
Track evolving trends in adult collections.
Demonstrate professional, positive, cooperative, and culturally sensitive relationships with coworkers, staff, and customers.
Assure that items are ordered in a timely manner and in quantities that meet demand.
Respond to collection requests from customers and staff using informed judgment, attention to equity, intellectual freedom, and good stewardship principles.
Participate in committees when needed to explore new products or services, improve cross-departmental communication and / or establish new procedures.
Participate in additional projects including opening day collections, collection refreshes, and renovations.
Experience working with adults, adult materials and reader’s advisory.
A demonstrated and active commitment to EDI (equity, diversity and inclusion), intellectual freedom, and social justice.
Working knowledge of the elements that make up a relevant, popular, high-interest public library collection for adults, including broad-based collection development practices and current trends in selection, ordering, customer driven programs, and vendor services.
Ability to be self-motivated and work effectively independently, and collaborate with the Collection Development Office staff and other teams when necessary to complete tasks as assigned.
Ability to utilize vendor sites, library acquisition systems with close attention to detail, professional tools, review resources to evaluate and select materials, and develop and maintain strong working relationships with vendors.
Preferred qualifications :
Proficiency with the library catalog and familiarity with online ordering tools.
Experience working with adult materials, customer service, and reader’s advisory.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education requirement : Master’s Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program.
Experience Requirement : Two (2) years of professional library experience including one year of experience in a customer-centered environment.
Education / Experience Equivalency : No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
License / Certifications : None
