DPL is hiring a Library Assistant V for Decker Branch Library. In this position, you will set a high standard of customer service for other coworkers, welcoming all customers to the library, making connections that extend beyond the transactional, and explaining library policies so customers are able to meet obligations while finding value in their library experience. As team leader, you will use an equity-driven approach as you determine work priorities and develop schedules to provide staff coverage; encourage teammates’ growth and engagement as a group and individually; and develop work-related goals. This position works closely with the branch supervisor, conducting hiring interviews and selecting high quality candidates that represent a wide array of perspectives and life experiences, reporting building and technology issues, and serving as person-in-charge in the branch supervisor’s absence. As the point person for Circulation, you will oversee circulation functions by interpreting policies, communicating procedural changes, and using informed judgment appropriately and equitably to resolve issues. You will also serve as the branch Change Fund Custodian, being a responsible steward of all cash funds and customer payments, and ensuring staff are up to date in training and processes.

The Decker Branch Library is a small, historic branch located in the corner of Platt Park. Serving Platt Park, Overland Park, Rosedale Harvard Gulch and more, we are conveniently located near the thriving businesses along South Pearl and Broadway. Open six days a week, we are highly used by our community, who rely on the library for access to materials, technology, and a space to connect with neighbors. We are committed to serving our community whether it is through our popular programs for young children and families, or through the reference, advisory, and outreach services that we offer. We pride ourselves on being welcoming to all, including youth, older adults, and our unhoused neighbors.

- A demonstrated commitment to developing and maintaining a welcoming environment for young people, including babies, toddlers, preschoolers, grade schoolers, and teens.
- Availability to work the hours the branch is open, which may include weekends and evenings.
- Willingness to work at any of our locations due to emergency situations to fill leaves/vacancies, operational need, etc.
Minimum qualifications
- Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
- Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of clerical experience.
- Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience providing customer service in a library setting.
- Bilingual or multilingual a plus, but not required.
