Who We Are

The (OMPD) is a comprehensive public defender office that is client-centered, independent, and innovative in representation of individuals charged with municipal ordinance violations and traffic cases in the Denver County Court System. In 2021, OMPD launched its own internal division to address the holistic needs of OMPD’s clients : The Client Support Team (CST). OMPD has fully integrated the CST and wraparound support into the defense team : the CST works closely with attorneys in court, creates reentry plans with clients in jail, and connects clients to resources like food stamps, employment, shelter and housing, treatment, and more. OMPD’s aim is to increase resource connections, improve court outcomes and attendance, and ultimately to reduce future criminal justice system involvement.

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The hourly pay range for this position is $23.33 - $35.00. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but is not limited to :

Location

In this position you will work on site at the Office of the Municipal Public Defender located at : 710 W Colfax, Denver CO 80204. This position will work four (4) or more days onsite from 8 : 00AM – 5 : 00PM.

What You’ll Do

OMPD is seeking a Peer Support Specialist I to provide peer support and resource navigation to the adult individuals OMPD represents. The CST division serves as part of the defense team and are bound by the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct including rules regarding attorney-client privilege and client confidentiality.

Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following :

  • Builds person-centered relationships with clients using a trauma informed peer support model
  • Demonstrates in work with clients : recovery oriented, person-centered, voluntary, and relationship focused; and the in work with clients
  • Uses shared lived experiences to inspire hope and to provide linkages to a variety of recovery, mental health, community supports, and services
  • Engages clients with goal setting methods to identify services, resources, develop timelines, and partners with clients to succeed in self-determined goals, and monitors success
  • Works in close partnership with attorneys, administrative staff, and other Client Support Team staff
  • Supports the defense team by being present regularly at court
  • Visits clients in Denver jails and partners with clients to create transition and support plans.
  • Facilitates Wellness Recovery Action Plan workshops
  • Collaborates with City and community resource providers and programs to actively connect clients to services, resources, and other supports.
  • Completes all required documentation. Gathers and maintains data for grant reporting requirements and defense team communication – including documenting progress, client contacts, and updating case records
  • Other duties as needed and assigned

    Our ideal candidate will have :

  • Highly desired, but not required : Possession of a peer support related certification.
  • Lived experience of mental health, substance use, trauma, and / or co-occurring conditions is highly valued.
  • Knowledge and experience with the Denver Criminal Justice system, court processes, public defense – including the role of the defense council.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish
  • Knowledge of Denver metro resources, services, and community supports.
  • Experience with, and ability to work and communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Passion for and experience working with people experiencing marginalization, including people who use substances, people living with mental health challenges, and people with unstable housing.
  • Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Wellness Recovery Action Plan facilitation or advanced level facilitation experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and data entry experience.
  • Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Requirement :  Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Experience Requirement :  One (1) year of experience providing peer support as a volunteer or professional.
  • Education and Experience Equivalency :  A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements.
