What We Offer
This is an on-call position, which means it is a part-time, hourly role. This position will work no more than 39 hours per week. The starting pay is $19.59/ hour and is eligible to enroll in the City and County of Denver’s 457b retirement plan. This position is not eligible for other additional benefits. On‐call positions may have routine or variable work schedules.
Location
This position will report to 945 South Huron Street in Denver, CO.
What You’ll Do
Seasonal Volunteer Project Coordinators play an important role in maintaining and stewarding Denver’s extensive system of urban and mountain parks that are essential to the community’s well-being. These individuals learn and practice a wide variety of general maintenance and landscaping skills. They also engage, lead, manage and train community members directly in the care of Denver’s parks through Denver Parks and Recreation’s Volunteer & Stewardship Program.
Volunteer Project Coordinators are provided a unique opportunity to work with a wide variety of individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds. The work experience and expertise attained in the field of park operations and maintenance provides potential promotional opportunities within the department.
Working closely with Denver’s communities and public and private organizations, the position will support Mayor Johnston’s “Vibrant Denver” goal by engaging and enhancing neighborhoods citywide.
Additionally, in 2024, Denver Parks and Recreation set forth an ambitious goal to grow and expand the Partnerships and Volunteer & Stewardship Programs. The Volunteer Project Coordinator will serve a critical role in coordinating, leading, managing and training an increased number of partners, volunteers and stewards across Denver Parks and Recreation. By leveraging the support of volunteers and stewards, the position will help address staffing and resource shortages during the department’s busiest seasons, especially spring, summer, and fall.
Reporting to the department’s Volunteer Program Manager, this position will primarily coordinate, lead and manage volunteer projects throughout Denver’s urban and mountain park system. The Volunteer Project Coordinator will also train volunteers and stewards to ensure compliance with park maintenance standards and public safety requirements reporting to the Volunteer Program Manager. Additional assigned tasks may include field work to support the Parks and Forestry Division’s operations outside of volunteer projects.

As a Volunteer Coordinator you will:
  • Lead and work with community volunteers on one-day projects and through the Park Stewardship Program, which includes the adopt-a-park, adopt-a-trail and adopt-a-flowerbed programs
  • Work outdoors in parks using and maintaining various hand-powered tools and motorized equipment in a safe and efficient manner
  • Interact with, work and learn alongside DPR staff park maintenance generalists and/or specialists such as Irrigation Technicians, Horticultural Workers, Park Horticulturists, Forestry Technicians and other experts in unique green industry fields and skilled trades work
  • Perform administrative duties including:
    • Data entry - MS Word and Excel
    • Order materials and direct delivery of materials for volunteer projects
    • Work with the permit office, managing data in Offero and tracking Offero
    • Collect and file waivers as well as order office supplies and equipment for volunteer projects
  • Lead volunteers and/or work alongside DPR staff in landscape maintenance tasks including:
    • Turf maintenance (e.g., laying sod, fertilizing, mowing, edging, raking)
    • Ornamental/garden maintenance (planting, weeding, minor pruning)
    • Tree planting and maintenance (especially mulching)
    • Infrastructure maintenance and repair such as fencing, asphalt, concrete, trails work and grade work/erosion control
    • Snow removal operations such as shoveling and de-icing
    • Various related duties as needed such as trash collection and vandalism repair/graffiti removal

  • Experience working with volunteers of all ages and skill/ability
  • Experience in park/landscape maintenance, horticulture and/or forestry
  • Proficiency with various hand-powered tools and motorized equipment
  • Ability to work a variable schedule, including weekends and evenings as assigned to manage volunteer projects
