This entry-level Fire Fighter Recruit I position is the first step to becoming a Fire Fighter with the Honolulu Fire Department. As a Fire Fighter Recruit I, you will be put through the Honolulu Fire Fighter Recruit Training Program and receive intensive classroom and field training in the theories, techniques, methods, and procedures used in firefighting and rescue work, and under supervision, perform or assist in firefighting and other specialized emergency operations. The use of protective equipment is required due to possible exposure to hazardous and obnoxious conditions or environments. Work schedule involves 24-hour shifts, weekends and holidays.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Students who will be graduating high school in the class of 2024 may apply. The education requirement must be met by June 30, 2024. Graduation from high school is subject to verification.
Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT
Valid driver's license (automobile), prior to appointment.

Fire Fighter Recruits must possess sound moral character, integrity, and credibility in addition to the ability to provide emergency fire services. They must have the ability to make sound judgments in emergency situations. Each candidate's character and background (including a fingerprint-based criminal history records check) will be reviewed to determine suitability for employment.
4) Suitability Review
The Department of Human Resources will review criminal convictions, dismissals from employment, separations from military service under other than honorable conditions, and other relevant factors to determine suitability for employment. In addition, the selectee's driving records may also be reviewed. Due to the nature of the position, selectees will be required to be fingerprinted as part of their employment suitability review. The Department of Human Resources will review criminal history record information from the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
NOTE: At the time of interview/assessment with HFD, candidates will be required to submit a copy of their driver's license, and may also be required to submit copies of current traffic abstract(s).
5) Medical Evaluation
Candidates must meet the medical requirements established for the City and County of Honolulu for the position of Fire Fighter Recruit I. If selected, a medical examination will be administered to determine whether the candidate meets the standards for vision, hearing, pulmonary function, etc. Candidates who do not meet the medical requirements will be disqualified. The vision requirements are listed below:
2) For wearers of glasses, gas permeable, or hard contact lenses, far uncorrected visual acuity must be 20/100 binocular or better.
4) Color vision must be adequate to distinguish red, green, and amber.
Upon selection and placement into a Fire Fighter Recruit I class, recruits must complete all requirements of the HFD Fire Fighter Recruit Training Program. This will include compliance with the requirements of all participating training facilities and completion of 26-34 weeks of recruit training with satisfactory grade in all subjects, e.g. fire operations and procedures, hose evolutions, ladder drills, forcible entry, salvage, emergency medical care, rescue procedures, operation of fire trucks, advanced lifesaving and water safety, etc.
All Fire Fighter Recruits must successfully pass an initial probationary period before becoming a regular member of the Civil Service. Currently, the initial probationary period is one year, but the duration is subject to collective bargaining.
Required certificates earned through the Fire Fighter Recruit Training Program must be maintained on a current basis thereafter throughout employment in this class with the HFD.
Passing an annual physical examination administered by the City Physician is also a requirement for continued employment in this class.
