The Department of Parks and Recreation, Division of Urban Forestry, Horticulture Services Branch, located at the Kapiolani Nursery, is looking for a Nursery Worker I to perform a variety of work such as:
- Propagating, cultivating, fertilizing, pruning, planting, care and maintenance of plants and trees in nurseries and tree farms;
- Landscaping and maintenance of lawns, planting strips, traffic medians and islands, park grounds, bikeways and gardens and other areas;
- Applying pesticides for disease, insects and weed control with hand, backpack, and power sprayer;
- Upkeeping existing facilities including the cleaning of offices, warehouse, bathrooms and kitchen;
- Interacting with the public in a courteous manner including resolving all inquiries and/or complaints and;
- Other related duties as assigned.
Special work requirements include handling and using chemicals, and working in areas treated with chemicals with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). May work solely in remote secluded mountainous areas, where there is no drinking water, restroom, or electricity. Will also serve as Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and cultivation of plants, including the propagation of various plants.
Such experience must have demonstrated the knowledge of a variety of trees and plants, their care and propagation; practices, tools, equipment and materials used in nursery work; plant diseases and pests and effective methods of controlling them; various commercial fertilizers and their use, etc. And the ability to do grafting, air-layering and seed germination; identify various plants; recognize common plant diseases, insects and pests; use common tools and equipment used in nursery work; and understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Substitution: Successful completion of the AG149 Plant Propagation course from Windward Community College or similar plant propagation coursework from a regionally-accredited college or university may substitute for the required experience.

- Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), prior to appointment.
- Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test, prior to appointment.
- First Aid/CPR/AED certificates, prior to completion of probation.
