The Department of Planning and Permitting, Administration Division, Honolulu Land Information System (HOLIS) Branch, is looking for an Supervising Geographic Information System Cartographic Technician to help plan, supervise and coordinate through subordinate supervisors, the various Geographic Information System (GIS) drafting, cartographic, data entry and related activities of a large section.
As a Supervising Geographic Information System Cartographic Technician, your duties and responsibilities will include:
- Confers with the City-wide GIS Administrator, GIS Analysts, and planners to analyze new GIS and drafting projects to determine the costs, work hours, and technical requirements; discusses and determines the design and feasibility of the project and the time table; suggests alternatives or modifications to the project requirements as necessary.
- Establishes goals, outline requirements, and provides general instructions to subordinate supervisors regarding scope, objectives, time limitations, and priorities of GIS mapping, data entry, and drafting projects for DPP.
- Oversees and review GIS data entry, mapping and drafting work for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to established standards.
- Develops and coordinates training programs for GIS Cartographic Technicians.
- Performs other duties related to GIS cartographic work and other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school with courses in mathematics and mechanical drawing.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three years of GIS cartographic experience.
Such experience must also include, or be supplemented by, work experience demonstrating aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader, or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.
Substitution:
- An Associate's degree in Architectural, Engineering and CAD Technologies from a regionally-accredited university/college may be substituted for two years of the required GIS cartographic experience.
- A Bachelor's degree in Geography with course work in Geographic Information Systems from a regionally-accredited university/college may be substituted for the three years of GIS cartographic experience.
Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.
