GIS Cartographic Technician I (SR-17) $4,409/month Independently performs highly skilled and difficult drafting and cartographic work in support of the City's computerized Geographic Information System (GIS); performs complex mathematical calculations, analysis and interpretation of a variety of data and source documents for entry into the GIS system; prepares, creates and maintains the full range and variety of maps, plans, tracings, drawings and other illustrative products including the utilization of complex computerized programs and the development of customized systems, procedures and techniques; and performs other related duties as required. |
Series Definition: The Geographic Information System Cartographic Technician series is distinguished by its responsibility for maintaining and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the land parcel data base information stored in the City's computerized Geographical Information System, and utilizing said system to create and maintain a wide range and variety of maps, plans, tracings, drawings and other illustrative products. The work is technical in nature, requiring computerized drafting knowledges, skills and abilities.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school with courses in mathematics and mechanical drawing. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Four years of drafting or cartographic experience, one of which must have included the use of GIS and related software in the development, construction and/or modification of cartographic or other illustrative products.
Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of characteristics, capabilities and requirements of GIS and computer aided drafting software and equipment, including terminology, commands and codes; nomenclature and conventional symbols of drafting and cartography; cartographic and surveying concepts, practices, techniques, instruments and equipment; and map making processes, methods and techniques; and the ability to utilize GIS, computer aided drafting, and related software to input data, layout, coordinate and create a variety of drafting, cartographic and other illustrative products; adapt or modify existing work practices and procedures in the creation of complex maps; make mathematical computations using logarithmic, trigonometric and curve data tables; and interpret maps, plans, descriptions and written materials and explain pertinent data thereon to others.
Desirable Experience: Experience in creating and editing maps using Arc GIS 10.x software systems.
Substitution:
1. An Associate's degree in Architectural, Engineering and CAD Technologies from an accredited college or university may be substituted for two (2) years of the required drafting experience.
2. A Bachelor's degree in Geography with course work in Geographic Information Systems from an accredited college or university may be substituted for all of the required experience.
Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided.
