The Department of Parks and Recreation, Executive Services Division is hiring a Recreation Specialist II (Shorewater).  

Examples of duties of a Recreation Specialist II (Shorewater), includes but is not limited to the following:  
  • Review applications, contact applicants for clarification, rank applications, mail approval/denial letters to applicants, determine and develop the calendar pertaining to shore water events.
  • Conduct inspections of various shore water event sites during various periods such as weekends, holidays, and weekdays with focus on winter surf season, summer surf season, and weekends checking for compliance with shore water events rules and requirements, documenting sites and conditions as needed.
  • Operates light motor vehicle or personal vehicle to monitor various shore water events sites occurring on a daily basis, throughout the island.
  • Investigates and respond to complaints, inquiries, including e-mails, phone calls, meetings in person, on-site inspections, DARTS, Mayor’s RISRS, and One View issues.
  • Develops and prepares draft ordinances, park rules and regulations, as well as departmental policies and procedures relating to the issuance of shore water events permits.
Special Work Requirements: May be required to work weekends, holidays, and evenings. Position also serves as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, group work, or a related field.

Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.

Verification Requirement: You must submit evidence of your education in order to be given credit. Please attach an electronic copy of your diploma and/or official transcript which shows the embossed seal or applicable FCE to your application. Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree. 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three (3) years of recreation experience, one (1) year of which shall have been in planning, organizing, coordinating and/or directing recreational shore water programs and/or activities (e.g. sail race, jet ski race, paddle board race, surf event, canoe race, windsurfing, scuba, snorkeling, etc.).

Substitution: A Master's degree in recreation, physical education, or education from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university may be substituted for one (1) year of the general recreation experience requirement. There is no substitution for the required one (1) year of experience in the specialty area of planning, organizing, coordinating and/or directing recreational shore water programs and/or activities.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Valid appropriate driver's license (automobile/Type 3), prior to appointment.

Prior to completion of probation, possession of a valid:
  1. American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate, or equivalent; and
  2. American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and AED Certificate, to include care for choking and obstructed airway, or equivalent.
Note:  These certificates must be maintained on a current basis thereafter.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE EVALUATION:
In addition to meeting the above minimum qualifications, your application will be further evaluated.  Your score will be based on the quality and quantity of your education, experience and/or other related job requirements and competencies applicable to the position.  Failure to provide sufficient information may result in your application being rejected or your receiving a lower score.
