Parks and Recreation is seeking a Full-Time Seasonal Groundskeeper Assistant to join the team at the Jensen-Olson Arboretum.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Applicants need to have some experience with plant care. Some public garden experience will be helpful but not required. Familiarity with weather, ecology, and plants of Southeast Alaska is appreciated. The best candidates should have an interest in horticulture and a desire to expand their knowledge of gardening in Southeast. Knowing plant names, proper trimming, planting techniques, soil health, identifying water needs, and identifying plant stress conditions will be helpful but will also be taught and directed by the arboretum manager. The arboretum is managed with best public garden practices and as organic as possible to protect people and the coastal waters.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position works Wednesday - Sunday, 9 : 00am - 5 : 00pm, shifts are 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week. Worksite location is at the Jensen-Olson Arboretum, 23035 Glacier Hwy, Juneau, AK. The arboretum is closed Monday and Tuesday. Employees must have their own transportation as public transport does not encompass this area.
Typical Responsibilities
The Groundskeeper Assistant, under direct supervision of the Arboretum Manager, performs a variety of duties in an outdoor environment relating to the CBJ-maintained Jensen-Olson Arboretum to maintain high standards of garden maintenance and visitor services.
Groundskeeper assistant duties are landscape maintenance and include : seeding, planting, weeding, transplanting, watering, pruning of shrubs and some trees, raking, spreading compost and mulch, monitoring plant health, harvesting food plants, maintaining tools, and interacting with visitors.
This position is required to use tools and protective equipment, all will be supplied. Hand tools are clippers, pruners, trowels, rakes, and shovels. Use of power tools such as leaf blower, edger, weed whacker, and mower may be necessary. As a demonstration garden and historic site, the groundskeeper assistant should be prepared to interact with visitors to provide educational information. This is a garden maintenance job; most work will be done outside in various types of weather. An enclosed, heated breakroom is provided. The groundskeeper assistant should be prepared to assist the manager and other staff to mitigate visitor and wildlife interactions. Black bears are common on the property as vegetables and fruit ripen.
Minimum Qualifications
Not less than 18 years of age; AND
Valid Driver's License at time of appointment .
Desirable Qualifications :
Education and / or experience in horticulture desired.
