Job Summary
As a steamfitter apprentice, you will progress through a 5-year structured apprenticeship program, with the potential to become a journeyman steamfitter upon completion. This position will train while assisting Journeyman steamfitters in the installation, maintenance, and repair of piping systems. The apprentice will receive both practical and theoretical training in the steam fitting trade.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist steamfitters in the installation, repair, and maintenance of piping systems that carry steam, water, chemicals, food-grade products, and gases.
- Learn to measure, cut, thread, and install pipes using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.
- Work with a variety of materials, including steel, copper, and plastic piping.
- Participate in the layout and installation of piping systems in accordance with blueprints, specifications, and safety codes.
- Assist in inspecting systems and troubleshooting issues, including leaks, corrosion, and mechanical failures.
- Safely operate equipment and tools, including pipe cutters, threaders, wrenches, and welding machines.
- Adhere to safety guidelines and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment at all times.
- Maintain work areas by keeping them clean, organized, and free from hazards.
- Attend classroom and on-the-job training sessions to develop industry-specific knowledge and technical skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (required).
- Basic knowledge of math (measuring, fractions, and angles).
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings (preferred but not required).
- Welding experience (preferred but not required).
- Ability to work in various environments, including confined spaces, elevated heights, and extreme temperatures.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from more experienced team members.
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety standards.
- Willingness to enroll in and complete the union apprenticeship program and courses as part of the training.
- Availability to work overtime and weekend hours.
Benefits/Compensation (if required)
- Starting base pay is $18.66 per hour, pay increases based on the program schedule for 5 years, current journeyman rate is $46.65 and increases with yearly contract raises.
