Job Description:
We are looking for an experienced and results-driven Controller to oversee the accounting and reporting operations of our organization. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of accounting principles, financial management, reporting, and compliance. In this role, you will lead financial reporting, manage the company’s accounting team, and drive the financial health of the business. You will play a key role in enhancing financial performance through data-driven insights, budget management, and process improvements. As a Controller, you will ensure the integrity of financial statements, implement best practices in accounting, and collaborate closely with senior leadership to support organizational growth and profitability.
The Controller responsibilities will include, but not limited to, the following initiatives and tasks:
Responsibilities:
Financial Oversight & Reporting
- Oversee the preparation and accuracy of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for residential properties, ensuring compliance with reporting standards and industry-specific regulations.
- Provide detailed financial analysis and reporting to senior management, identifying trends in rental income, operational costs, and other key performance indicators to drive business strategy.
- Lead the month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Manage relationships with internal and external financial stakeholders.
- Manage the relationship with external tax return preparers and reviewers/auditors where necessary.
Accounting Operations & Compliance
- Supervise daily accounting functions for residential properties, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, property taxes, and capital expenditure tracking.
- Manage the reconciliation of the general ledger for each property, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting for individual properties and the overall portfolio.
- Ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Budgeting and Forecasting
- Collaborate with senior leadership and community managers to create budgets, forecasts, and financial plans that align with the strategic goals of the residential property portfolio.
- Optimize accounting processes, ensuring timely and efficient financial operations.
- Leverage financial software to streamline property-level reporting, resident ledgers, and financial reconciliation across the entire portfolio.
- Monitor financial performance against budget, identify variances, and recommend corrective actions.
Professional Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
- CPA certification is a plus but not required.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in accounting.
- Minimum of 2 years in a leadership role, with a focus on team management.
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative, dynamic, and results-driven organization.
- Experience in accounting and property management software (, MRI, QuickBooks, or similar software)
- Experience in multifamily real estate or public accounting.
- Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and financial analysis.

- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Proficiency in data collection, financial analysis, and reporting.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, ensuring accuracy in all financial records.
- Proficient in the suite of MS Office, particularly Excel, for data analysis and reporting.
