GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the administrative direction of the Deputy Fire Chief, the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) is responsible for performing a variety of skilled work in the repair, overhaul, preventive maintenance and operational readiness of public safety equipment and may be assigned to manage the day-to-day operation of the Fire Department maintenance facility.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
The Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) I exercises no supervision.
The EVT II may exercise functional supervision over lower level staff.
The EVT III may function as lead worker over other EVT staff, utilizing human resources to accomplish assignments in accordance with safety plans and in an efficient manner.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Plan and schedule Fire Department’s maintenance, both preventive and discretionary; ensure compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Department of Transportation (DOT), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and City of Abilene and Fire Department safety policies and regulations in maintenance operations and in determining operational readiness of public safety equipment.
Study problematic equipment and design necessary modifications to correct complications; assist in the development of the Fire Department budget and equipment specifications; make recommendations concerning equipment replacement and purchases and assist in disposal of replaced and used equipment.
Assist in analyzing equipment, material, and supply needs; maintain Fire Department user security for the computerized equipment management information systems (EMIS) and maintain detailed equipment records through the (EMIS).
Stay abreast of new fleet products and research/test them in fleet applications; maintain Tier II hazardous materials reports for the department’s maintenance facility.
Perform routine maintenance and repair of all Fire Department vehicles and equipment including comprehensive fire apparatus repairs, diesel engine repairs, rebuild fire pumps, brake system repairs, electrical system diagnostic and repair, and hydraulic repairs.
Will be subject to call-back assignments when off-duty as assigned by the Division Head; and may serve on various employee committees as required and assigned.

For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Experience:
One (1) year of experience performing at the journey level in the duties equivalent to that of an Automotive Repair Technician is required.
Education/Training:
Completion of an approved mechanics training course offered by a trade, vocational, or community college is required.
License or Certificate:
A valid Texas driver’s license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.
A valid Class B Texas driver’s license (CDL) with acceptable driving record for the past three years is preferred.
Must be a certified by Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) in the following fields within three (3) years:
1. T-4: Heavy-Duty Truck, Brakes
2. T-5: Heavy-Duty Truck, Suspension and Steering
3. Completion of EVT Certification Tracks for Level I including F-1: Inspection, Maintenance & Testing of Fire Apparatus, and F-2: Design & Performance of Fire Apparatus within three (3) years of hire.
Emergency Vehicle Technician II
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience performing at the journey level in the duties equivalent to that of an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) I is required.
A certified mechanic by Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) in the fields required for Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) I is required.
Education/Training:
Completion of an approved mechanics training course offered by a trade, vocational, or community college is required.
License or Certificate:
Must be certified by Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) in the following fields in addition to those required for Emergency Vehicle Technician Level I:
1. T-2: Heavy-Duty Truck, Diesel Engines
2. T-3: Heavy-Duty Truck, Drive Train
3. T-6: Heavy-Duty Truck, Electrical Systems
A EVT Certification for F-3: Fire Pumps & Accessories and F-4: Electrical Systems is required.
Completion of additional EVT Certification Tracks for Level II including Ambulance Technician, Airport Rescue and Fire-Fighting (ARFF) Technician, and Law Enforcement Vehicle Technician must be completed within two years after completion of EVT Level I.
A Texas Department of Public Safety Certified Vehicle Inspector certification required.
A 1990 Clean Air Act, Section 609, Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Certification is required.
Emergency Vehicle Technician III
Experience:
A minimum of five (5) years of Emergency Vehicle Technician experience is required.
A certified mechanic by Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) in the fields required for Emergency Vehicle Technician Level II is required.
Education/Training:
Completion of an approved mechanics training course offered by a trade, vocational, or community college is required.
License of Certificate:
Must be certified by Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) in the following fields in addition to those required for EVT Level I and EVT Level II:
1. T-1: Heavy-Duty Truck, Gasoline Engines
