Position Summary
This position is responsible for managing the maintenance and operations of the Prisoner Transport Division, Police Department Fleet and Facilities.

Position Description
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manages the operations of the prisoner transport unit.
  • Supervises, trains, schedules, assigns, directs, and evaluates assigned personnel.
  • Reviews daily employee logs and reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assists and coordinates with court services and designated jails regarding prisoner records, bonding and sentence, and release date information.
  • Coordinates medical appointments and transportation as needed for inmates.
  • Serves as the liaison to the city’s Building Maintenance Division for coordination facility set up, regular maintenance, and custodial services.
  • Oversees inmate disciplinary actions.
  • Serves and represents the police department on the city’s Safety Committee.
  • Coordinates general maintenance, repair, and procurement of police department vehicles; oversees equipment upfits, status, assignments, mileage, replacement projections and completion of yearly emission inspections.
  • Maintains records on vehicles involved in accidents, coordinates repair estimates, meets with insurance adjusters and necessary city personnel to facilitate repairs or disposition.
  • Overtly displays a positive attitude that sincerely supports and encourages the betterment of the City of Acworth, the citizenry, city officials, supervision, counterparts, and subordinates.
  • Ensures compliance with state and federal laws and with city and department policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of inmate security and correctional institution security principles.
  • Knowledge of correctional institution security principles.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance, security, and life safety principles.
  • Knowledge of general vehicle maintenance requirements and schedules.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of tactical defense and restraint procedure.
  • Knowledge of departmental and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Skill in planning, organization and decision making.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Police Captain assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES
Guidelines include federal and state laws, fire codes, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of varied management and supervisory duties. The varied needs of the department contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to manage and oversee the transport division, department fleet and facility maintenance. Successful performance helps ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of those functions.
CONTACTS
  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, other emergency service providers, court system personnel, attorneys, judges, medical personnel, law enforcement officers from other agencies, arrestees (sentenced and unsentenced) and family members, vendors, contractors, insurance adjusters, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, motivate persons, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must occasionally lift light or heavy objects, use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguish between shades of color, and use the physical force necessary to restrain persons.
  • The work is performed indoors, in a vehicle, and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather, infectious diseases, and life-threatening situations. The work requires the use of specialized law enforcement equipment.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over Public Safety Liaisons.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain the Georgia Jailer Certification within six months.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain GCIC/NCIC certification.
