What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Control Officer position at City of Aiken?
The City of Aiken is accepting applications for an Environmental Control Officer in our Public Safety Department.
The Environmental Control Officer enforces animal control and litter laws in the City in accordance with all applicable legal considerations. Removes stray, diseased, injured, and dead animals from the community, ensures safety of citizens from nuisance animals, and ensures health and safety of citizens from litter and unhealthy areas.
Examples of Duties
- Captures, transports, and impounds stray, injured, and diseased animals; removes dead animals
- Humanely euthanizes animals that present a potential hazard to the public
- Uses animal traps or tranquilizing gun to capture or sedate animals
- Manage the Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program for the City
- Investigates complaints of animal cruelty, nuisance animals, and vicious animals; investigates animal bites to humans and ensures animal is quarantined
- Investigates complaints of litter, unlawful dumping, and other forms of litter
- Takes telephone calls and meets with the public to respond to questions and resolve problems concerning the animal and litter control laws
- Charges and prosecutes individuals with violations of animal and litter control laws; testifies in court as needed
- Maintains equipment and tools; cleans and repairs cables of restraint poles; repairs wire on traps; repairs holes in net; sanitizes animal traps and vehicle; cleans tranquilizer gun; wears safety gear when appropriate; notifies supervisor of equipment problems
- Performs duties in a safe manner; maintains awareness of others in work area
- Installs computer chips in animals for easier identification purposes
- Produces incident reports on all animal calls
Other Responsibilities
- Assist with other Department functions as needed, such as traffic control
- Prepares reports, papers, and other documents; maintains and updates records and files
- Educate the public and officers on safe handling practices, animal laws, and animal welfare
- Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One to two years of experience working with animals or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Valid state driver's license and a satisfactory motor vehicle record
- Must obtain and maintain euthanasia certification
- Firefighting certifications, first responders certification desirable
- Chemical capture certifications, National Animal Control certification desirable
- Some law enforcement training preferred
- Analytical ability to determine hazardous situations and best method to use in restraining animals
- Interpersonal skills necessary to be courteous of fellow employees, citizens, and businesses while performing duties
- Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 60% of the work day
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $18.18 - $24.50 per hour
