Characteristic Work
- Ensure safety of students
- Perform minor repairs, including, but not limited to, air handler and room filter replacement, grease electric motors and shafts
- Operate and perform routine maintenance on the heating and cooling systems
- Maintain an accurate inventory of all custodial equipment, materials and supplies
- Request needed equipment, materials and supplies
- Shovel and remove snow from school grounds
- Mow school lawns
- Maintain a clean and safe boiler room
- Sweep, vacuum, mop and wax floors
- Empty and clean waste receptacles, trash pails and pencil sharpeners
- Refill soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers and toilet paper dispensers throughout the building
- Remove cobwebs, clean windows and chalkboards
- Conduct nightly visits to the mechanical rooms checking monitors and controls to validate safe operation
- Secure building at night
- Clean and maintain custodial equipment and materials
- Clean and sanitize restrooms
- Repair equipment and building as needed
- Conduct periodic inspections of the building
- Complete paperwork as required by supervisor
- Promote good safety practices and procedures
- Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
- Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
- Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation
- Isolate problems and service areas of the heating and cooling systems
- Perform manual work in the custodial care of building and adjacent grounds
- Perform minor maintenance in the building and its adjacent grounds
- Responsible for using proper methods and materials in cleaning and caring for buildings and equipment
- Exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces
- Work cooperatively with others
- Assume supervisory responsibilities on their shift in absence of the custodian
- Maintain school grounds and landscape
- Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
- Report any/all discipline issues to the Head Custodian and/or Custodial Services office in a timely manner
- Attend meetings and seminars as required
- Perform related duties as assigned by the Head Custodian
- Move heavy articles such as desks, tables, file cabinets, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited High School or G.E.D.
- A minimum of two years of paid experience performing custodial and housekeeping work
- State of Ohio Low Pressure Boiler Operator License desired. License required for assignments at buildings operating a low pressure steam boiler.
- Ability to work effectively with others
- Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing

- Knowledge of heating and cooling systems
- Knowledge of electrical and plumbing repairs
- Knowledge of appropriate safety procedures
- Knowledge of the proper care and storage of chemicals

- Knowledge of heating and cooling plant operations
- Ability to use computer to change different functions of heating and cooling systems
- Ability to work with the general public as customers
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to learn proper use of materials, methods and practices used in cleaning operations
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment
- Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces
Competitive Examination Process
This is a classified position.
The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.
Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.
NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates.
