POSITIONS MAY BE PERMANENT, SEASONAL, OR TEMPORARY.


This is semi-skilled manual labor.

An employee in this class performs manual laboring tasks requiring manipulative skill in the use of small hand or power tools or operation of the less complex types of power equipment.

Works as a member of a crew under close supervision or independently under general supervision. Work may require heavy physical exertion and may be performed under adverse weather conditions outdoors.

Characteristic Work

Spreads and rakes asphalt mix to proper thickness and grade on roadways. Assists in setting and resetting curbs. Loosens and digs out areas with pneumatic tools for roadway repair. Builds wooden forms for concrete. Rough finishes concrete. Applies the proper amount of liquid patch to roadways by operating the controls of liquid patch spreader. Operates slag spreader and spreads slag by hand. Sets up barricades and lights in emergencies. Repairs and installs fencing. Performs a variety of maintenance tasks such as emptying trash cans, painting, replacing light bulbs, unclogging drains and toilets. Assists skilled workers in more complex maintenance tasks. Drives pickup or small dump truck to transport personnel and materials to and from job sites. Loads and unloads materials from trucks. Installs and repairs playground and recreation equipment. Cuts grass with power mower, walk behind, or push mower. Operates weed eater for weed control. Rakes leaves, picks up debris, and performs other tasks to assist in the maintenance of parks. Assists in planting trees and spreading mulch. Cuts back plants and brush. Assists skilled personnel in herbicide and pesticide application. Parks, cleans and maintains division vehicles. Secures parking lots and decks. Communicates with other employees and supervisors utilizing a mobile or hand-held radio. Performs related work as required.


Minimum Qualifications

Ability to read and write. A minimum of one year of experience in general laboring operations. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver’s license. May require possession of a valid State of Ohio commercial driver's license (class and endorsements as required by division shown below).


Basic knowledge of the methods and equipment used in labor operations.

Ability to use small machines, hand tools, power tools, and less complex power equipment. Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for long periods, often under adverse weather conditions. Ability to communicate in an effective manner. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. List of essential functions available upon request.

Competitive Examination Process

This is a classified position.


The candidates will be ranked in a standard manner based on information, records, and other data related to the candidate's ability to perform the duties of the position. In order to be placed on the eligibility list, qualifying applicants will be required to pass a physical ability test to demonstrate their ability to perform the essential functions of the position. If your name is placed on the eligibility list, your name will remain on the eligibility list for one year unless you are removed in accordance with Human Resource policy or hired for a permanent position.


Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment. (SEE LIST OF CDL REQUIREMENTS)


Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates for permanent positions.


RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.


VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.


DRIVER'S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
