Definition

This is supervisory and storekeeping work in municipal operations.


An employee in this class is responsible for all operations of a storeroom facility which is considered of high complexity due to the value, volume, or critical aspects of the inventory, and supervisory responsibilities. Employee supervises lower-level personnel who assist in the routine operation of the facility.


Work is usually performed under general supervision with considerable opportunity for the use of independent judgment within established policies, rules, and regulations.

Characteristic Work

Requisitions materials, tools, supplies, and equipment for stock and immediate use. Contacts suppliers about product availability, price quotes, shipping dates and other necessary information. Visits suppliers to assure supplies meet City specifications. Drives to various locations to deliver and pick up ordered or repaired items. Prepares written description of returnable goods and equipment. Packages and ships returnable items. Supervises, coordinates, and participates in maintaining manual and electronic inventory systems and other records necessary for the operation of the storeroom facility. Supervises and works with lower-level employees engaged in routine stores operations such as receiving, inspecting, issuing and storing materials, tools, supplies, and equipment. Trains and instructs subordinate employees in all aspects of the work. Monitors work activity for safe and efficient operation. May conduct periodic performance appraisals for subordinate employees. Manually lifts, transports by hand, cart or forklift and stacks items of inventory. Makes minor repairs to tools and equipment such as shovels, hammers, rubber hoses, and floodlights. Separates or alters items of inventory such as the cutting of steel chain with a bolt cutter. Regularly checks inventory levels to maintain supplies and to check for out-of-date, perishable goods. Prepares various reports on materials, tools, supplies, equipment and work activities. Applies department and/or division safety principles and practices. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of paid experience as a storekeeper or four years of paid experience in storeroom operations. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.


Considerable knowledge of storeroom methods and practices. Considerable knowledge of the materials, tools, supplies, and equipment stored. Considerable knowledge of purchasing and requisition procedures.


Skill in the operation of relevant office equipment including personal computers and software applications related to inventory management. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other persons.


Ability to supervise the work of subordinate level personnel and to train them in all aspects of the work. Ability to manage storeroom operations, to keep pertinent manual and computerized records and prepare necessary reports. Ability to communicate in an effective manner. Ability to make mathematical calculations with timeliness and accuracy. Ability to manually lift, transport, stack, repair, and separate items of inventory. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Competitive Examination Process

This is a classified position.

The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates.

NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.

DRIVER'S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
