Assistant Fire Marshal
Salary Range: 58,052.80 - $80,350.40
The purpose of this position is to assist in fire prevention and investigation activities of the department to safeguard public safety, health, and general welfare.
3 years of experience in the fire service, including completion of Professional Firefighter I/II, Fire Investigator I, Fire Inspector I, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must obtain APOST certification within one year of employment.
OR
APOST Certified with 3 years of experience and must obtain Professional Firefighter I/II, Fire Investigator I, Fire Inspector I within one year of employment.
Minimum age 21. High school diploma or G.E.D. Certification. Must be able to successfully complete a Class-A physical, drug screen, thorough background check, polygraph examination, and psychological examination. Must not be legally precluded from possessing/carrying a firearm and must not have been convicted of felony or misdemeanor involving domestic violence, weapons, or a crime of moral turpitude. Must possess a valid Alabama Driver’s License.

Assistant Fire Marshal

The purpose of this position is to assist in fire prevention and investigation activities of the department to safeguard public safety, health, and general welfare.
- Conducts fire prevention inspections; examines interiors and exteriors of buildings to detect hazardous conditions or violations of fire laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards; issues notices for corrections; conducts re-inspections as needed
- Reviews plans and specifications for proposed construction and remodeling plans to ensure compliance with state and local fire and building code requirements.
- Inspects and/or test fire protection and/or fire detections systems to verify that systems are installed in accordance with laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
- Condemns houses and other structures; issues and approves certificate of occupancy and permits; declares buildings or systems safe
- Explains code violations to the general public and assists citizens with code compliance
- Investigates suspicious and accidental fires, and fire-related injuries and deaths to determine the cause and origin of the fire; seeks out and questions victims, witnesses and suspects; develops leads and tips; obtains and preserves evidence; evaluates facts and evidence, obtains warrants and makes arrests as appropriate.
- Prepares case files and other documents needed for prosecution; testifies at criminal proceedings or fire code violations proceedings as needed.
- Assists with code enforcement activities; responds to and/or investigates complaints; patrols City to locate potential code violations and takes appropriate action as needed; documents code enforcement activities.
