Chief of Police
Salary Range: $109,449.60 - $151,507.20

The City of Alabaster is continually voted as one of the safest cities in Alabama, is the largest city in Shelby County and boasts an elite school system. Following the retirement of the standing police chief, the Alabaster Police Department is looking for the next strong leader who demonstrates the experiences, skills and abilities described below to lead the department within a Mayor/Council form of government.
The City and the Department expect the new Chief to be an effective leader, able to enthusiastically embrace challenges and opportunities for improvement that may face the department. The successful candidate will be an adept communicator capable of negotiating and resolving conflicts internal and external to a department primed for continued success. A highly skilled developer of talent will be critical in ensuring the department moves forward to meet the future needs of our workforce. Decisions will be required of the new chief demanding a refined ability to identify alternate solutions and garner support throughout the department as well as across city agencies. The new chief must be able to skillfully yet relentlessly drive decisions forward and embrace change when needed. The chief should also be an advocate for the use of metrics and performance outcomes when analyzing problems and making decisions. Finally, the successful candidate will be able to easily navigate within the department, across other departments, and within our diverse community demonstrating the use of his/her interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective relationships.
The chief will have successful demonstrations in strategic leadership, managerial stewardship, community relations, operational readiness, budget and financial management and governmental relations to find success in this position.
Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration or related field. Must be certified by the Alabama Police Officers Standards & Training Commission.
Strongly preferred: FBI National Academy graduate, Certified Law Enforcement Executive Program
Experience:
The successful candidate will have at least ten (10) years of experience in police work, five (5) years of experience as a Police Chief in a similarly-sized jurisdiction or as a high level commander/administrator at a rank not less than a lieutenant and show progressive supervisory/management experience with a range of operational and administrative experience. Experience should include leadership responsibility in various management functions such as operations, HR, legal, discipline, hiring, and/or budget. Previous experience working within a Mayor/Council form of government is desired.
Essential Physical Requirements: The physical activities required for this position involve: Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing, smelling; occasional running, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. This position requires lifting: Up to 25 pounds frequently; up to 50 pounds occasionally. This position has the following special vision requirements: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
