ELIGBILITY
To be eligible for this program, applicants:
• Must be a City of Alameda resident
• Must be at least 16 years old
• Must be currently enrolled in High School
• Must be able to obtain a valid school work permit
SALARY AND HOURS
Salary range for Interns will be $17.00 per hour, after City Council approval for CPI adjustment in June. Interns may work up to 100 hours.

Base Reuse & Economic Development Department

The City of Alameda’s Base Reuse & Economic Development Department is excited to offer two summer internship positions supporting economic development within the City.
Marketing/Photography/Social Media
This is an excellent opportunity for a student who has interest in photography and marketing. Under the supervision of the Base Reuse & Economic Development Department, duties will include:
- Creating and editing visual and written content, related to local small business, for the City of Alameda’s website;
- Working with the City’s photographer to develop imagery and marketing materials to bring businesses and visitors to Alameda;
- Producing high quality and visually appealing photographs and content for various purposes, including newsletters, social media, and marketing campaigns that promote local businesses
Desired (but not required) skills include:
- Marketing and social media
- Experience with photography, Adobe Creative Suite, and Canva
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Strong work ethic
- Experience working with social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook etc)
- Basic computer knowledge, such as familiarity with Microsoft Word

City Manager's Office, 2 Opportunities
Supervised by Sarah Henry, Communication and Legislative Affairs Officer.
This is an excellent opportunity for students who have an interest in communications and community outreach. Intern must have a working knowledge of TikTok and social media.
Duties will include:
- Creating content and getting followers for the City's video and social media accounts
- Participate in events and visit Alameda sites and landmarks
- The intern will have the opportunity to work with the City’s Communications and Legislative Affairs Officer and City photographer (TBD to add)
Housing and Human Services
Housing and Human Services (HHS) is located in the City Manager’s Office and supports residents who are homeless or at risk of homelessness by providing services and shelter, as well as offering flexible funding. HHS collaborates with community and social services providers whose programs preserve safety net services for low-income residents. HHS facilitates the preservation, rehabilitation and construction of affordable housing in Alameda to help keep residents housed.
- Participate in the City’s Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing by surveying low-income households.
- Work with the City’s Social Service and Human Relations Board (SSHRB) to complete a status report on The Road Home: A Five-Year Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness in Alameda.
- Support the Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth and their Families (ACCYF) Youth Advocacy Board members and events, including the development of an LGBTQ Youth Center in Alameda.
Finance Department
Supervised by Stacy Wiley, Business License Clerk; Nerissa Pon, Accounting Technician; and Carlos Figueroa, Finance Supervisor.
The City of Alameda Finance Department Department is looking for one intern who will assist with a variety of assignments like organizing financial records, updating databases, and conducting basic research. The responsibilities may include data entry, helping with paperwork, and supporting team members with administrative tasks. You could also be involved in simple projects like organizing files, preparing materials for meeting, or performing basic calculations. Past interns have gained valuable skills and experience as well as an insight into the workings of a government agency in the public sector.
Alameda Fire Department
Supervised by Captain Alex Barbour, Training Division.
The Alameda Fire Department is excited to offer a summer internship position that will show what it’s like to be a firefighter. The candidate should have interest in a fire related career.
- Primarily working in our Training Division to support our recruit academy and helping to set up training for our on-line fire suppression members
- Ride along on one of our fire engines, or ambulances to experience emergency calls
- Working in the fire house on daily station duties alongside firefighters
Human Resources Department
Intern will have the opportunity to learn various aspects within Human Resources and what it takes to support City employees. Assignment may include:
- Recruitment Assistance: Work with various departments to draft and posts bulletins, outreach to various agencies to obtain raters for exams, participate in facilitating examinations.
- Surveys: Conduct agency research including classification, salary and benefit surveys.
- Employee Engagement: Review opportunities for employees trainings, service awards, appreciation picnic.
- Technology: Maintain the HR website, utilize social media for job announcements and outreach.
Information Technology Department (IT)
Supervised by Zachary Baron, Information Technology Systems Analyst.
This is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Interns will work with the latest version of Arc GIS Pro desktop application as well as our Enterprise GIS environment on the web.
- GIS related tasks – Projects will include:
- Digitizing data sets
- Building new GIS data sets
- Creating web maps and web applications using the new data
- Creating mobile apps for data collection, and interactive dashboards
Planning & Building Department
The City of Alameda Planning Division is looking for two interns who will assist on a variety of assignments including customer service, improvements to the online Planning application processes and information, and customer feedback outreach. This is an exciting opportunity for an intern to learn about the public interface and procedures of the Planning Division at the permit center.
Past interns in the Planning Division that have found the experience rewarding demonstrate the following:

Alameda Police Department

- Two student interns will work in a pair from 8 am to 12 pm, Monday through Thursday for two weeks
- Students will rotate through four to six departments within the Police Department
- Excellent opportunity for students who have an interest in police work and/or would like to learn how the police department works
- Some specific exposures will include shadowing a crime scene analyst, working with the Community Outreach Department, observing dispatch, and completing administrative duties

The City of Alameda Recreation and Park Department looking for one intern who will assist on a variety of assignments to support the Mastick Senior Center and the Recreation Division. Duties include
- Assisting/planning various programs (Movie Nights, Mercy Brown Bag, Rentals)
- Assist with Leisure Cub activities and events
- Construction of the Mastick Newsletter
- Promotion of Mastick programs via social media
- Putting together New member Orientation Packets
- Photocopying fliers
- Working in Tenderfoot Camp assisting w/ 3-5 year olds
Rent Program
Supervised by Ryan Halpern – Admin Management Analyst
The Alameda Rent Program is offering an opportunity for a student to learn about the City's efforts to promote equity and stability in the rental market. A department of the City Attorney's Office, the program administers local regulations limiting rent increases and requiring relocation payments in certain circumstances. Projects will primarily involve working with the Alameda Rent Registry, verifying and updating information, assisting Rent Program staff in annual registration entry, and notifying new property owners of the City's regulations. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to assist Rent Program staff with identifying and resolving violations of the City's Rent Ordinance, such as invalid rent increases and unpaid fees. This internship is an opportunity for students interested in both housing policy and gaining experience working with a web-based database of public information.
