Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Recreation Center Division of the Parks and Recreation Department in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Required: School or work experience that shows a level of maturity necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of lifeguarding. This can be shown by completion of the American Red Cross program or other certification programs, membership in clubs, teams, or organizations that show the ability to be dependable and reliable; andSuccessfully pass a swim test to verify swimming abilities. Testing may include, but is not limited to, one or more of the following elements: timed swim, distance swim, object retrieval, and/or rescue techniques.Required during tenure: Must obtain and/or maintain certification(s) necessary to perform Essential Duties effectively and safely, including but not limited to: Within 30 days of hire: American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification (PRC) (training provided).Desired: Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification (PRC).
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Work is primarily performed outside with exposure to heat, sunburn, varied weather conditions, odors, dust, and pollen;Must be able to see well enough to identify swimmers and observe behavior; hear well enough to distinguish the sound of someone calling for help in a noisy outdoor environment, and speak well enough to be understood in a noisy environment;Requires strength and stamina to sit and stand for extended periods of time, walk on uneven and slippery surfaces, grasp, bend, reach, twist, kneel, and squat;Must be able to climb ladders and ascend and descend stairs;Lift and/or move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; the lifting of any object greater than fifty (50) pounds by a single individual is prohibited. Lifting objects, materials, or equipment weighing more than fifty (50) pounds require the buddy system or the use of devices designed to assist with lifting or moving. Proper lifting techniques shall be used when lifting items of any weight;May be exposed to chemicals, skin irritants, and pathogens;May be exposed to stressful emergency situations; andPosition requires a varied work schedule that may include early mornings, days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
