The Position
The purpose of this classification is to perform manual work functions associated with construction, repair, identification, and maintenance of gas utility lines and related systems/equipment
Duties
Assists in locating and repairing gas lines, meters, valves and related equipment.
Assist in locating and identifying gas lines for contractors and customers doing excavation work.
Performs manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of gas utility systems which may include locating/repairing gas lines, locating/repairing gas leaks, coating pipes with hot wrap, locating gas valves, connecting/disconnecting gas meters, repairing/replacing gas meters, regulators, resetting meters, digging holes and trenches, shoveling materials, etc.
Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair of gas utility systems which may include a utility truck, pipe locator, valve locator, leak detector, hydraulic squeezer, pipe cutter, pipe threader, post hole digger, shovel, mechanic tools, plumbing tools, two-way radio, etc.
Performs general and preventive maintenance as needed to maintain vehicles and equipment in operable condition such as inspecting equipment, pumping fuel, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, washing/cleaning equipment, etc.
Checks/maintains supply of equipment, tools and supplies for use at work sites.
Performs leak surveys to identify potential gas leaks and prepare requests for repair.
Receives, prepares and/or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, work orders, and other documents; processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service.
Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
May be required to work after normal business hours, weekends, and holidays in the event of a natural disaster, power outages, down power lines, gas leak, fiber optic lines, trees, etc. or any disruption of service to WG&L customers; during periods of severe weather, required to contact immediate supervisor for any instructions.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required; some previous experience preferred but not required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License. Must pass and maintain DOT qualifications.
