What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tree Trimmer - Utilities position at City of Albany and Dougherty County, GA?
The Position
The purpose of this classification is to perform manual work functions associated with removal of trees, trimming of foliage, and maintenance of trees and shrubs on power line, telecommunication, gas line and water line right of ways. This classification is reserved for use by Albany Water, Gas & Light positions responsible for leading a crew of workers assigned to the maintenance of trees and foliage along overhead power distribution lines; it is distinguished from similar classification in City operations by the level of complexity, training, and environmental hazards.
Duties
Performs manual work functions associated with tree maintenance which may include climbing trees, trimming trees, felling and removing trees, pulling tree limbs from telecommunications, gas, water or energized power lines; loading limbs into chipper, grinding stumps, cutting wood, lifting/moving heavy materials, digging holes, shoveling materials, removing storm debris, picking up debris/litter, flagging traffic, applying herbicides to cut stumps and limbs, etc.
Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools used in tree maintenance work which may include a utility truck, dump truck, bulldozer, bucket truck, aerial lift, stump grinder, chipper, chainsaw, hydraulic pole saw, manual pole saw, climbing equipment, shovel, rake, axe, mechanic tools, etc.
Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to maintain machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, such as inspecting equipment, sharpening/replacing blades, replacing chains, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning work areas, etc.; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Prepares work sites; sets up road work signs; cones off work areas; directs/flags traffic.
Checks/maintains equipment, tools and supplies for use at work sites; transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects.
Provides direction, guidance and assistance to other employees as assigned; monitors work safety factors to ensure safety of work crews.
Receives, reviews, prepares and/or completes various forms, reports, work orders, maps, correspondence, manuals, or other documentation; completes written and hands-on tests; processes and forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to routine requests for information and/or service from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Employees in this position may also apply herbicides to control Woody species along utility and street right of ways. Must be able to read and understand material data sheets, read and document weather status when applying herbicides. Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed; performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving tree removal, tree trimming, or other tree maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s) or obtain it within six (6) months of hire. Georgia Pesticide applicators license preferred, but not required for entry level.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very heavy physical effort in very heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) and occasionally heavier items (100 pounds or over).
