What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Master Mechanic position at City of Albany, Georgia?
The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled/mechanical work functions associated with repair and maintenance of fleet vehicles and heavy mechanical equipment. This position can also be used in a Lead role to oversee, assign, inspect, lower classification mechanic and technicians work. Perform quality inspections prior to vehicles being released back to the customer.The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Provides guidance, assistance, and training to other staff members; assigns, monitors and evaluates work.
Provides technical expertise in diagnosing/repairing difficult problems.
Performs general and specialized mechanical repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance work such as dismantling, overhauling, repairing and reassembling engines, removing/replacing transmissions, servicing automatic transmissions, etc.
Inspects, tests and repairs engine components and systems such as ignition systems, computerized engine controls, electronic fuel injection systems, steering systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, hydraulic brake systems, engine cooling systems, fuel systems, charging systems, starting systems, emission systems, air conditioning systems, etc.
Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as pumping fuel into vehicles, checking/replacing fluid levels, draining/replacing oil, changing/replacing filters, lubricating mechanical parts, rotating tires, replacing tires/belts/hoses, checking batteries, greasing equipment, flushing radiators, performing basic body repair, performing light welding and fabrication, etc.
Performs welding and fabrication tasks associated with equipment repairs.
Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining and testing vehicles and equipment which may include a service truck, law enforcement specialized vehicles, bus, dump truck, farm tractor, forklift, sweeper, fire apparatus, tractor trailer, bulldozer, backhoe, end loader, garbage truck, sweeper, bucket truck, fuel truck, generator, tire changer, computerized tire balancer, battery/charging system analyzer, transfer pump, air conditioner recovery/recycling machine, air wrench, air compressor, pressure washer, hydraulic jack, grease gun, tire hammer, welder, torch, metal grinder, drill press, gauges, mechanic tools, volt ohmmeter, diagnostic instruments and computers, etc.
Performs fuel island maintenance and key validation.
Tests machinery, equipment and parts for proper operations; reports problem situations; performs general maintenance tasks necessary to maintain tools and equipment in operable condition; reports faulty equipment for repair. Maintain accurate work orders and notes inputted into the Fleet Management System.
Assists in maintaining inventory of parts, equipment, tools or supplies; receives incoming parts; initiates requests for new or replacement materials; obtains and/or transports parts/supplies as needed.
Makes emergency service calls for disabled vehicles at job sites or on the road.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises employees in the Fleet Management Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.High school diploma or GED required; Associate's degree in mechanics preferred; supplemented by three (3) years previous journey-level work experience and/or training involving automotive/mechanical repair and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain valid ASE Master Auto Mechanic certification and an ASE Master Truck Mechanic certification, and/or EVT certification. Must possess and maintain valid Air Conditioning/CFC Recovery certification. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License, a valid Georgia Class A Commercial Driver's License is preferred.
