The purpose of this classification is to operate equipment and perform manual work functions associated with construction, distribution, maintenance and repair of the water utility system.Provides guidance and assistance to crew members; assigns and assesses work; provides training as needed.
Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in water system construction, maintenance and repair which may include a dump truck, boom truck, bulldozer, backhoe, forklift, boring machine, trencher, tapping machine, tamping machine, pipe horn, pipe saw, pipe locator, mower, weed eater, jackhammer, air compressor, drill press, post hole digger, shovel, axe, saw, mechanic tools, etc.
Transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects.
Performs manual work functions associated with water system construction, maintenance and repair which may include locating/marking water lines, repairing pipeline breaks/leaks, installing water taps, repairing/servicing fire hydrants, laying/installing pipe, installing/repairing water meters, boring under roadways, packing dirt, digging holes or trenches, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, flagging traffic, etc.
Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to maintain machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Maintains adequate stock of equipment, tools, supplies and materials on department truck for use at work sites.
Prepares and/or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, drawings, and other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, work tickets, time sheets, drawings, maps, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, city departments, contractors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Performs various tasks associated with maintaining building, grounds and work areas; mowing grass, planting sod, cutting weeds, picking up trash and litter, etc.
Responds to emergencies as needed, after hours on trouble truck; provides assistance and/or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service.
Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
May perform duties of supervisor in absence of same.
Performs other related duties as required.High school diploma or GED; supplemented by Vocational/Technical training in equipment operation, pesticide/chemical application, or related field; supplemented by three (3) years previous experience and/or training involving water utility construction/maintenance work and equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia EPD Water Distribution Operators Certificate; required to obtain and maintain a oil & Water Erosion Control Certificate within 6 months of being hired. Must possess a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).Data Utilization: Requires the ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, or summarize data/information. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.
