Scope of Role
Plans, coordinates, implements, and supervises a variety of recreational programming, athletic programming, and special events for the City of Albemarle with a focus on adults (50 and older), people with disabilities and other specialty populations as assigned, unmet community need presents or by reasonable community request.
Plan, coordinate, teach, and supervise a variety of recreational and leisure time activities for the citizens of the community. Work involves considerable planning and scheduling of activities and contact with participants, volunteers, partners, and contracted personnel. Recruits part-time and volunteer staff, as well as participants; publicizes program activities; coordinates activities with center staff; and supervises the successful implementation of programs. Employee is also responsible for ordering equipment and supplies and maintaining the safety of assigned grounds, buildings, and other facilities. Employee will focus on programs geared toward the senior population and will have knowledge of and support athletics, and other designated recreational areas. Work is performed in accordance with Departmental rules and policies and requires judgment and discretion in interpretation of programs, and the application of game rules, and procedures. Employees are subject to hazards in parks and recreation including working in both inside and outside environments and in extreme temperatures and noise. Duties may also expose the employee to human body fluids and the work is covered by the OSHA requirements of blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Director and/or Sr. Recreation Supervisor and is evaluated in terms of program effectiveness, through observation, and public feedback.
Essential Duties
- Serves as Uwharrie Senior Games Coordinator. Plans, organizes, fundraises and promotes the Senior Games program according to Senior Games North Carolina guidelines. Facilitates year-round collaboration with local agencies to provide outreach, education, classes, special events, trips and programming for older adults.
- Plans, organizes, promotes and facilitates recreation activities for various population groups including such programs as recreation classes, special events, events and trips, programs for people with disabilities, and other activities as assigned; acquires supplies, arranges schedules, locations, and personnel to staff such activities.
- Plans, coordinates, promotes, and facilitates several special events to include Uwharrie Senior Games Events – Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Nights at the Station, and other special events as assigned. Attendance at all APR Required Events as decided by the Director.
- Recruits, trains, assigns, and supervises volunteers, coaches, officials and paid staff; reviews and assures standards and requirements are being met.
- Maintains consistent and transparent rules, policies and procedures to educate; Uses solution-based, proactive, or creative thinking to resolve and de-escalate conflicts.
- Promotes programs and events and solicits donations or sponsorships; makes presentations to community groups; serves on community/civic boards. Prepares flyers and information in accordance with marketing need or request.
- Schedules times and secures locations for a variety of events, programs, meetings and group performances.
- Monitors and assures clean and neat appearance of the recreation center; communicates with other Departmental staff for preparation of programs and events. At times may be responsible for opening and closing the facility per the facility need.
- Assists in the formulation and execution of Departmental policies and procedures.
- Assists with locating and applying for grants, administering grants; preparing budget requests; processing purchase orders and maintaining inventory of equipment and supply needs; makes recommendations for budget of activities and programs.
- Uses online registration system (RecDesk) to register all users for programs, rent space, and perform basic transactions; uses Torch to register athletes for Uwharrie Senior Games Events.
- Serves as a liaison with other public and private groups and agencies as directed by Supervisor
- Assists in the preparation of regular and special reports as required.
- Performs related duties as required.
Qualifications
Required:
- 2-4 years experience planning, implementing, and evaluating programs geared toward a community setting.
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in recreation administration, physical education, or related degree and experience in recreational programming with an emphasis on the senior recreational programming; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Possession of a current and valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
- CPR/First Aid Certification within timeframe determined by supervisor.
