Description

General Statement of Duties : Performs routine to skilled building and equipment maintenance work in and around the Wastewater Treatment Plant; performs related duties as required.

Supervision Received : Works under the general supervision of the Wastewater Superintendent; receives work direction from the WWTP Foreperson.

WWTP Maintenance

  • Inspects, services, tests, lubricates, adjusts, cleans, repairs, overhauls and replaces valves, bearings, gears, shafting, conveyors, motors, switches, fixtures, ventilators, boilers, air handling units and other equipment at the waste water treatment plant.
  • Dismantles, removes, installs and repairs a variety of pumps including constructing or repairing the base.
  • Performs miscellaneous maintenance, construction, and repair work on the buildings including cleaning, painting, repairing, basic electrical repair to existing lines, plumbing, welding and fabricating parts out of metal or wood, etc.
  • Performs pipefitting for installations, re-routing or replacing water, gas and air lines.
  • Cleans clarifiers and digesters using air-handling equipment.
  • Cleans and performs preventative and routine maintenance on department vehicles and maintains mowers and snowblowers.
  • Uses a variety of tools including drills, impact wrenches, table saws, band saws, drill press, jack hammer, welders and running torch.
  • Replaces steam lines, gaskets, valves and steam traps on the heating units.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies, materials and parts and requests or orders replacements as needed.
  • Reviews repair logs, prioritizes, plans and schedules the work.
  • Responds to call-out for emergency work during off-hours.
  • Responds to alarms and adjusts as needed; reports major alarms to Plant Superintendent.

WWTP Operator

  • Tests wastewater influent and effluent quality; checks plant system flow on computer and adjusts as needed.
  • Collects, records and analyzes daily water and wastewater readings and samples for pH, chlorine residuals, fluoride and phosphate levels and adjusts chemical feed accordingly; informs superintendent of any abnormal readings or problems.
  • Performs daily inspections of wastewater treatment plant to ensure all systems are operating properly, chemicals are feeding properly and the system is following local, State and Federal requirements; notifies the Superintendent of any problems or concerns.
  • Monitors the amount of methane gas used by the turbans to generate electricity; determines the number of turbans to run and reads and records electricity being used.
  • Maintains log of all work performed on each piece of equipment and completes required maintenance and safety reports; enters data into plant computers.
  • Informs Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent of any equipment and safety problems.
  • Responds to alarms and adjusts as needed; reports major alarms to Plant Superintendent.
  • Monitors and maintains steam generating boilers used in the operation of the plant and tracks gas flow and number of hours of operation; prepares boilers for State inspections.
  • Monitors sludge thickness and flow to storage and tracks the number of gallons of chemicals used and the digester levels.
  • Monitors and maintains the UV system; monitors, adjusts and maintains the blowers and tracks air flow.
  • Inspects the operation of the grit building daily and cleans pits and stones on an annual basis.
  • Requests supplies, materials, and parts through the Superintendent, when necessary, for wastewater treatment plant operations.
  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance on wastewater equipment and plant including carpentry, plumbing, electrical repair, painting, and welding.
  • Inspects plant on assigned weekends to ensure that record-keeping, pumping, computers and plant equipment is operating properly, gathers samples and performs minor lab work.
  • Follows all safety and operational rules, regulations, policies and practices.
  • Performs the draining and inspection of the treatment plant on an annual basis.
  • Inspects, services, tests, lubricates, adjusts, cleans, repairs, overhauls and replaces valves, bearings, gears, shafting, conveyors, motors, switches, fixtures, ventilators, boilers, air handling units and other equipment at the waste water treatment plant.

    Loads and unloads items shipped to the Plant and packages items to be shipped out

    Mows grass during the summer months and snow removal during the winter months.

    Performs other duties as needed or assigned.

    Typical Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of tools, methods, practices and materials used in WWTP building and equipment maintenance and repair operations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary to perform manual and maintenance work in a WWTP.
  • Considerable skill in plant maintenance including cleaning, carpentry, plumbing, concrete work, welding, basic electrical and painting.
  • Considerable ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, including the ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, push, pull, twist, turn, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, work at heights and in considerable depths, and to maintain balance while performing the work.
  • Considerable ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Considerable ability to operate and maintain a wide variety of tools and equipment.
  • Considerable ability to regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and less frequently lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • Considerable ability to work at heights, or in depths, of up to 48 feet while cleaning tanks and digesters and repairing valves.
  • Considerable ability to use fine and large motor skills and to see, hear and smell.
  • Considerable ability to work with or be exposed to hazardous gases, chemicals, irritants or fumes, and with some exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Considerable ability to work while exposed to loud noises and some risk of electric shock.
  • Considerable ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Working ability to follow oral and written instructions and to work independently.

    Working ability to communicate effectively with City staff.

    Working ability to maintain accurate records, maintain inventory and determine amounts and types of supplies to order.

    Working ability to remove snow and maintain grounds.

    DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent with one year of experience maintaining buildings and equipment in a large industrial setting including installation and repair of pumps, or any equivalent combination of education, training and / or experience.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    Must possess and maintain a Minnesota Class D Wastewater license or the ability to obtain within twelve months of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid state Class A driver's license or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
